Missing Document for Interview?

Hi all,

My fiance and I will have our K-1 interview on Monday in HCMC, and everything seems to be in order, but for one huge problem: I managed to miss a "required" document: the original of my birth certificate. We have the photocopy of it, and the originals and copies of all other documents, including her birth certificate and both of our passports... but obviously, the consulate lists this as an absolute requirement. We are planning on going ahead with the interview (I will type up a short explanation of the missing birth cert for her to take in), but I wondered if anyone has some advice about missing a document at interview time--

1) Are we better off to go ahead with the interview, or to postpone it?

2) If we go ahead and they refuse to waive the requirement, but they find that otherwise the interview was acceptable, will be be rescheduled for a whole new interview, or can we just present them the original document at a later time when I can get it here from the US, and they will issue the visa at that time?

Any advice is much appreciated -- thank you in advance!!!

I wouldn't postpone the interview because of the missing original BC. Send it in w/ "super-dooper" express mail ASAP, in the meantime write an explanation for your fiancee to take w/ her to the interview. If its a document the consul wants to see and feels he/she needs to in order to make the visa decision, I think they will allow you to come back and submit the required document at a later date and be issued the visa.

Good luck!

Deptrai,

Do not postpone the interview, they need your birth cert to check if you and your fiance are relatives or not. Besides, they confirm your personal information as well.

If you was born in VN, just ask your family members to aply for certified copy from local office. If they don't want to help, you should give them some fee ("Uncle Ho") to help.

The certified copy is enough to show to US Consulate.

Good luck.

Hien

Thank you very much to all who posted for your advice!

Even though I didn't get to the internet to see it before the interview, we decided to go ahead without the document, even though it is listed as "required". I thought that the purpose must be to establish my US citizenship, so I gave her my original US passport, copy of birth certificate, and I wrote up and signed a sworn statement that I am a US citizen, together with a letter explaining that I could produce the original document at a later date if they require but we would like them to consider our case based on the documents provided.

Fortunately, they accepted it and we got the pink sheet. :-)

I did have the translation, but some people have confirmed they no longer required English translation for document that issued by Vietnamese Government!
