Yeah here's the littered straws cleaned up from a 2 block stretch of Miami beach. Straws have been prohibited in the area for 6 years. A full ban goes into effect in 2019. People have to ask why?

My guess is that on parts of Miami Beach there are as many condoms as there are straws.

Something else to think about banning

It's been pointed out already, but straws are inherently more dangerous to marine life (and land animals) than many other types of plastic. In general any type of plastic that animals can either ingest or get stuck inside is not good. There are many easy changes. Sell cans in boxes rather than plastic rings. Many stores are switching to paper or reusable bags. Stuff like that.

In the long run, there needs to be a trend to more biodegradable products. Even if there was a way to get trash ending up in the right place, billions of people can't keep discarding waste that takes 1000's of years to degrade. There will ultimately be consequences to that.

We had paper straws, and they fell out of favor.  We had paper bags in grocery stores.  Then came plastic.  Why?  Because we were destroying millions of acres of trees.  Trees that reduce Co2 and create oxygen.  Stupid trees!

Plastic bags cost less. That's the main reason for the switch. I worked in a grocery store in high school. "Paper or plastic sir"? Most people wanted paper until we eventually just stopped offering it.

Why not make the bags out of recycled paper? Like Whole Foods does.

Can you imagine the unintended consequences of banning condoms on the beaches of Miami?

Aren't most companies using recycled paper or plastic bags?  I know we use some of our plastic bags for the dogs second business, but the rest go to recycle sans dog poop.

Plastic bags also work well (and better than paper) for picking up the dog's business.

In a former life I ran a company that sold these . I never understood how they sold

I don't know how many companies do that. I use reusable bags for groceries.

Hopefully you wash or sanitize them occasionally.  I have read studies regarding re-usable grocery bags.

I don't really see the point when everything is in sealed packages or bags. The bags are not touching food. The germs can't make it through the packaging.

Don't believe that for a second.  Salmonella can easily exist on the outside of packaged meat.

Isn't' that why you wash your hands before you start preparing food?

I believe that many in this country are waaaaay to worried about germs. My family has had reusable bags for many many years and no one has gotten salmonella. I know a lot of people here freak out about the thought of eating raw cookie dough or batter. Done that all my life and never gotten sick.

Here in America, we sanitize everything top to bottom and there is a higher rate of allergies and asthma... Because the body never gets a chance to fight off germs and build up an immune system.
