So now that it’s more than just Starbucks, but entire states banning straws... why?  Does anyone really think straws are the issue, when SO MANY consumer products are made of plastic?  Water bottles, soda bottles, alcohol bottles, cars, kid’s toya.  I mean seriously, what difference will straws make?

Paper straws didn’t work out so well in the 60s.

Because they end up in our oceans, fish try to swallow them it gets stuck and fish die. That's just one example.

True, BUT the US is not the major offender for this problem.

Think Asia.

Let them ban plastic straws in China and Vietnam and...

No, ALL countries are major offenders. I mean just go down any highway in America and you will see people throw their trash out their car window... They are treating nature like a big trashcan.

Maybe not. But in Florida people leave trash on the beaches instead.

Yeah here's the littered straws cleaned up from a 2 block stretch of Miami beach. Straws have been prohibited in the area for 6 years. A full ban goes into effect in 2019. People have to ask why?

I ask why because of all the millions of tons of plastic made each year, straws are a tiny percentage.  So MANY more metric tons of plastic is out there.  Are we going to ban plastic yogurt and jello containers?  Plastic mayo jars?  Plastic Starbucks coffee cups?  Plastic utensils?

And going to the beach in Lauderdale on a regular basis, I can say I have never seen much trash at all, plastic or otherwise.

The main focus right now just happens to be straws because it's among the top 10 items found during beach clean up.

I've not been to the beach in Lauderdale. I've mostly been to a few beaches around Palm Beach and when I am there I usually clean up what I can see. Top 1 item when I clean up is straws.

Would be great if you could get rid of everything plastic. We don't need it.

I will keep my eyes open next time, see what I can see.

But if we go back to paper straws, you will soon see why they didn't last long in the 60s.

It's been pointed out already, but straws are inherently more dangerous to marine life (and land animals) than many other types of plastic. In general any type of plastic that animals can either ingest or get stuck inside is not good. There are many easy changes. Sell cans in boxes rather than plastic rings. Many stores are switching to paper or reusable bags. Stuff like that.

In the long run, there needs to be a trend to more biodegradable products. Even if there was a way to get trash ending up in the right place, billions of people can't keep discarding waste that takes 1000's of years to degrade. There will ultimately be consequences to that.

I think we all agree MDL, MDR and me the 1 MOR. That the mass dumping of non biodegrades into our Eco system and especially  our oceans is a real problem that needs to be addressed.

For those of you that have been to certain parts of Asia, you have seen how the waterways and oceans have became mass dumping grounds for Trash and plastics .  I think with the mass oceans of Trash I have seen floating in the Philippines,  non of it was straws.

Much more real credible issue than global warming

*sight*. One of the main reasons why straws are so bad is that they're to light to get picked up at recycling centers. How is that thing helping? And I saw that they now have special plastic strawless cups.

How is that an "environmental milestone"?
