Actually, I think Starbucks could just make people bring their own straws, then they could reduce their overhead (straws) and lower the cost of their products...

Seeing it from my lonely position in the Middle of the road. I dont think the environmental concern over plastic in our environment is that unreasonable. much like the political  absurdity of climate change. What is dumb is companies like starbucks using it as marketing tool while actually increasing plastic.

 

Many sq miles of plastic floating in the ocean is disturbing to most rational people. I will add that if you have been to some 3rd world countries, it's really eye opening.

 

Here is the bottom line. I think using straws is effeminate for men. I would never use one unless I was sick in a bed and it was the only means of drinking.

Nor do I.......but there are reasonable solutions.....like paper (bio-degradable) or re-usable straws...

I think using recycled paper straws would be a good solution. Using a metal straw would be too costly for them of course. I've actually seen recent stuff on people developing biodegradable plates and cups. I'm not sure how well they would hold up to very high heat drinks though.

 

The compostable straws they still intend on using for their cold drinks however are a joke, and do not compose any better than regular plastic according to studies. Of course I bet Starbucks will argue that cold drinks or Frappes won't 'taste' as nice coming through a paper straw..

I think Starbucks has absolutely no concern for the environment.  There is absolutely NO WAY they didn't know that the new lids used more plastic than the old lid and straw.....if this article is accurate, this "eco" move is nothing more than a scam, imo.

Can I see your data on the compostable straws, it could be they don't work in our garden but municipal composting works well.  When most cities have composting as part of their waste management I think you will see innovated products that eliminate landfill.

 

I worked for KJ the new president of Starbucks in another just  and I have enough faith in his ability to execute I doubled my position in Starbucks stock.

But there's a few others. It makes sense to me. Compostable is not biodegradable and these consumer products will still end up not properly composted or disposed of at a landfill where they will remain until the end of time. There is no doubt they are still an improvement, but I'd say paper straws would be far more green and economical.

I only drink hot beverages, straws don't work for that. The huffpo article was accurate:

Others need to be in an industrial composting facility. The downside of that is there’s only so much infrastructure for industrial composting across the U.S

 

i think we are close to critical mass on this though.

   Part of the impetus behind banning straws is that they are inherently dangerous to wild life and marine life, even beyond the issues that plastic presents in general. We were at the Denver zoo recently and they no longer let people bring any kind of straw in. The animals can end up swallowing them and choking. I don't think it's a bad idea in general to get rid of plastic items that are more dangerous to wildlife. There are other things too, like the plastic rings that go around cans.

Interesting. We just returned from the Galapagos where they use nothing but metal straws(I'm not really sure how it works with to go though as we always sat down). We thought the metal straws were pretty cool except for we didn't want to think about how they clean them. I would not want to use a paper straw I can tell you that...no thanks. Maybe if it was more cardboard-ish, but paper to me is far from a solution. I would almost say I prefer it to be metal, and just charge people extra if they're taking it with them. If they don't wanna pay extra again next time they can bring it back with them, or if they're sitting down then you don't charge them for it.

I must be getting really old because I remember as a kid paper straws were pretty much the only choice.
