Hi everyone. My mother and sister are in the process of applying a visit visa from Pakistan to USA to visit me. Can anyone please let me know a) if travel medical insurance is a mandatory requirement b) even if it is not mandatory, would it help the case i.e., help in the approval of visas?

Thanks a lot for your help.

That makes sense. I know it doesn't have any direct relation to the process of approval, but I thought it may show seriousness on the part of applicants, i.e., completing all necessary requirements beforehand, etc.

Also, can someone please tell me if it's a requirement that the CO asks for specifically i.e., whether or not you have travel insurance?

Seriousness is not a consideration for a B-2 visa. ;)

They are unlikely to ask, but nothing says they cannot and one must answer truthfully. But a simple "I plan to purchase it if the visa is approved" should suffice.

You’re not even supposed to buy an air ticket before the interview... so it would see a stretch to expect insurance

what they want to see is that the applicant will go back home. Funding unexpected events is secondary.

It’s madatory for some visas. Like schengen via France: I sat outside the consulate on the phone to my insurer organizing it! But none of the other schengen countries I applied to required it, and of course schengen requires air tickets etc are booked first which US specifically tells you not to do.

I applied a Schengen Visa for Spain and they had a mandatory requirement for travel medical insurance and air tickets. I applied for Ireland last year, they too, had both requirements prior to approval. (Both were tourist visas, both got approved). Which is why I wanted to make sure on US. It doesn't say on their website and I wanted to be sure I wasn't missing anything. I guess this requirement is for Europe only. Thanks!

OP specifically mentioned a US visit visa, not a Schengen visa. No mandatory ins requirement

Yes, but I surmised, apparently correctly, that he knew the schengen requirement and was concerned it might apply too ;)
