An expiration date is an expiration date - no more, no less. All anyone will probably tell you here is that it is strongly recommended that you travel to the US with your VISA as soon as possible, and not wait until the last minute (i.e. right before the visa expires). Things happen and you don't want to risk something taking longer than necessary and effecting your visa status.

In my opinion - the grace period between visa in hand and the expiration date is not so that you can wait until the last minute to take care of personal business. Personal business is something you should be wrapping up while you were waiting for the visa to be approved/issued. The grace period is to allow you ample time to travel to the US and complete whatever requirements for your particular visa (sounds like CR1 in your case) in order to move forward with adjustment of status.

Håll ut, y'all.

You can read an experience here.

Please note that some CBP officers do not know about new process.

So you should prepare all of your documents and a letter from Embassy noted about digital visa packet, and show them to CBP officer and explain.

Poster said in another thread she was asked to tell embassy of her travel plans when she has them, I assume that is to forewarn the POE.

In partial and pleasant clarification, lest the above by this excellent poster be taken out of context:  most instructions have made it very clear that visa applicants are NOT to quit their jobs, etc. until the visa is in hand.  Obviously, one's experience might vary.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Agree. I think a 6 month period is precisely to give people enough time to wrap things up, though I’d agree waiting till the last few days to travel is risky in case of travel delays etc.

Immigrant visas don’t require adjustment of status, only K1. Yet all immigrant visas still have the 6 months (from medical) expiry. If you have a decent job, a house to sell, a family with kids in school etc, moving “as soon as possible “ when you’ve been told not to make irreversible changes before visa in hand is simply not practical. Sure it’s much easier if you’re a young fiancé or spouse with nothing much to wrap up before you move.

Now I have made plan to travel and reach almost 25 days prior of expiry. But being student I had to wait till my final exams to finish n go. Yes definetly its mention into their process that do not quit your things before visa in hand so ofcourse thats right to wrap up into these 6 months.
