I travelend to see my fiancé too after receiving NOA2. I had copies with me, a letter from work, bills etc, all strong ties but they never asked me anything. The officer and I had a quick laugh after he asked what my job is back in the Netherlands and what my fiancé does for a living. That's it :-) It;s possible to travel after NOA2

My last entry was at the end of May, but I never got around to writing this, I'm sorry! I had a pretty scary (for me at least) experience this last time at LAX so I just wanted to share my experience with you all, because I have been consulting this website for months now! I will start with a timeline.

October 2013: Month long unrelated holiday to the US with my friend.

August 2014: Went to Europe for one month to visit family, ended up meeting my now fiance on a cruise!

November 2014: He visited Australia for one week!

February 2015: We visited South East Asia for a rendezvous holiday!

April 2015: I came to the US for 3 weeks to see how we liked "living" together and to meet more of his family! No issues at POE.

June 2015: After decided we wanted to make this work forever, I quit my job and packed two suitcases and came (with my cat!). No issues at POE.

July 2015: We went to Mexico for a week! No issues at POE and got restamped for another 90 days.

September 2015: Went back to Australia to visit family for one week and "reset the clock. No issues at POE but was asked how I could afford to travel with no job, told him I had saved up and was a full-time student.

November 2015: We went to Hong Kong and Macau for 2 weeks. No issues at POE.

February 2016: We both went to Australia to visit my family and friends for one week. Asked a few more questions then usual, replied that I'm loving travelling and spending time with my boyfriend and have plenty of money, no issues after that.

April 2016: We filed I-129F!!!

May 2016: I flew back to Australia to see my family for two weeks. This is when the "experience" happened.

I am a habitual worrier - I worry about everything. So after reading some horror stories I made sure I had all information I could find in case something happened at the POE. However, I had moved all my stuff back to my parents after coming here in June 2015, so I had no "lease information". I had no job and was a full-time online student. I do still have my car back in Australia so I had that information and I had a copy of the NOA1. I have a fair amount of money in the bank so I had a statement from the bank.

I got taken through to the line for "permanent residents" because the visitor line was huge, so the officer I saw didn't have a computer. He took my passport and asked why I was here, and I told him to see my boyfriend and then corrected myself to "fiance". He asked how long I was staying for and I said 2 months because in July we are going to Costa Rica and then he asked when the last time I was here and I said two weeks ago. He then looked through my passport for 10 minutes without saying anything while I just stood there scared. He then looks at me and says I'm abusing the system because I have a K-1 processing so I'm not a non-immigrant at all and that the next time I come through I won't be allowed in the country. He told me he was letting me in this time because I was "pretty". The officer next to him was laughing and said "good luck" with a smirk on his face. Then he stamped my passport and wrote something on the paper the passport scanner prints out that you give to the officer you see after you collect your bags.

Once I collected my bag, I waited to see the next officer who asked me how long I was staying and when was the last time I was here (never had that happen at the second officer right before you leave) and when I replied he told me I had to go to secondary processing. This is when I got SCARED!

I went through and saw the officer who asked me to open my suitcase and explain to him the situation. He asked what my fiance did and why I didn't have a ring (we are getting it custom made and had to go to Texas just a week ago to do all of that). He was so nice and explained to me that because I had the K-1 processing I had nothing to worry about and they don't want us to be away from our significant others, especially when we're doing it the right way. I asked him about what would happen at future entries because of what the first officer said and he said "you should have told that guy to mind his own business - he doesn't know what he's talking about!!". Then he told me that I might have to go to secondary processing again but he would continue to let me in as long as I wasn't doing anything wrong and the officer next to him said the same thing. He then said I was free to leave and to have fun and he was sorry I had a bad experience prior to seeing him!!

I was so relieved! But it just goes to show that we really don't have anything to worry about if we are doing it the right way! My advice is don't be scared if you get sent to secondary, just tell the truth and you will be fine! I have no job, no home of my own back in Australia and have been in the US for a total of 10 months in the last 12 and I was let in so please don't worry!

10 of the past 12 months in the US on the VWP? That is not doing it the right way. I think you got extremely lucky with your "bad experience" since what you are doing is by most standards considered abuse of the VWP. There have been people doing less than this that have had their VWP eligibility taken from them.

Well of course I understand I could get denied from re-entry at anytime and it was always a risk we were willing to take. My main reason for posting was to try and relieve some stress from people who are only visiting for a week or two at a time and minimal times.

I feel horrible for people that have been denied entry, but in reality it is not a common occurrence.

Hello everyone, one quick info. My fiance and I sent our k1 petition in December. Then due to some personal circumstances we decided to postpone the wedding to next year, and get married in my country. So we withdrew our application and got a letter stating it was withdrawn. No decision was made on the petition, no approval,no denial, just a withdrawal letter stating uscis action in the matter was terminated as of the date of the notice. I am in posses of a valid esta, expiring in 2017. Can I visit my fiance this summer (I'll bring proof of ties to my country)? Do I have to update the esta? (AGAIN, I didn't apply for the visa, it was just the petition). I do not intend to marry on this visit, I do not intend to overstay, nor doing anything illegal, I just want to visit. Am I good to go? Thanks in advance

Hi Everyone,

hopefully someone can offer some advice! :)

My fiancee and I have been engaged since January of this year. I have already visited him once on the VWP , i did not tell the officer he was my fiancee purely because it did not come up.

I am teacher (have proof of this etc, so i have to return) and I am visiting these school holidays for two weeks. We are about to submit our k-1 package to start out visa process. We will probably only be submitting our visa application about a week or so before I arrive. Will they even be aware of my k-1? Should I take my copy of the entire package anyway? And be open about telling them we have just started the process?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks everyone :)

Just wanted to share my first visiting trip after applying for K1.

We got our NOA1 about 3 weeks ago, and I visited 1 week ago.

Entered in JFK, New York.

Was not asked a single question - CO looked in my passport, saw my B1/B2 visa, stamped and go.

(I was even kind-of disappointed since I brought tons of material neatly filed in binders etc... x_x )

I hope your trip goes well. We are in a similar situation, as I am a teacher, and I will be visiting my fiancee over the summer. We plan to drive from Canada to the US. Please keep posting, as to how it goes. I will be crossing the border in the next few days. I have my paperwork proving my ties to Canada - job offer, mortgage on my house, bank statements.

Good luck, I am sure it will all work out great!

Hi Cindymaeve,

I entered the US at LAX on saturday. I was very confident and honest about what I was there for. Said that I was visiting my fiancee in charlotte that I am here for two weeks and Im a teacher so this is my school break.... he then asked how we met, he made a few jokes about how California is better and he wants to be invited to the wedding. Stamped my passport and told me to stay out of trouble haha.

I have never really had any trouble at POE... if anything I am always too open and honest. I know a lot of ppl say to not divulge unnecessary information and I agree to an extent, however, because I know I am not lying and willing to give any information I feel a lot more confident. I hope that makes sense...

From my experience they want to know, where you are going, who you are seeing (fiancee/boyfriend) and how long you will be there... I always throw in that I am a teacher and on school holidays. I basically offer this information up after they say 'hi' and ask where I am going. I am also always upbeat and bubbly (because I am naturally).

These are just my experiences... I travel to the US a lot. My fiancee and I have been together almost 5 years. I used to travel there in my university breaks for three months at a time... now I go every 10 weeks for 2 weeks. Never any issues :)

Hi All,

Just weighing in on this topic after visiting my fiance in Houston this past week. We already received out NOA2 two weeks ago so we were a little nervous about the scrutiny of the border guard, especially since the guard I encountered on my visit right after NOA1 was a bit mean.

This experience was so much different. I walked with a letter from my company stating that I was permanently employed and I was approved vacation leave and expected back to work by a certain date, but I didn't even need to pull the letter out of my bag! I was honest about saying I was there to visit my fiance and get some wedding planning done and he was very nice about it and didn't push the questioning about my intentions there at all.

So I guess it doesn't hurt to be prepared (that's what the job letter was for!) but I think the key is calm confidence. Remind yourself that you are not doing anything wrong by visiting, and if anyone had a bad experience, it really just boils down to the guard just being a douchebag....lol Fingers crossed you don't meet one of those!

Good luck and safe travels ppl!

Hi guys,

I hope you're all well. I'm writing this to tell you about my experience at Dublin airport when I went to visit Jonathan last week.

I purchased a ticket online via Kiwi.com (former Skypicker) with a layover to Dublin (from London) via Ryanair and then KLM (operated by Delta) to New York and vice versa on the way back.

The layover in Dublin on the way to NYC was only 2 hours, but I called the airport and made sure I had all the information I needed to be on time and pass security in the shortest possible time, I made all the arrangements and went through security at London Stansted Airport in a matter on minutes, same thing for the security check in Dublin, but I wasn't aware there was a U.S. preclearance to go through in order to get to the gate.

I basically had to do the same thing I had just done, and put my bag and belongings in a tray to be checked for the second time in the same airport, when I asked why, I was told that in Dublin you have European security and U.S. security, so it "saves time" when you get to the U.S. because you don't have to go through customs, but the whole process is done in Ireland.

I went through security very quickly and I then got to another room where I queued for about 15-20 minutes to get an officer to take my fingerprints and check my passport, when it was my turn, I was seen by the officer Mattina, who asked me why I was going to the U.S., what did my boyfriend do for work, what his address was, and why I had a boyfriend in the U.S., after asking me these questions he took my passport and asked me to follow him to another room, I sensed something was wrong and I said "Sir, I'm going to miss my flight" and his response was "I don't care, you can discuss that with your airline", he asked me to sit down and gave my documents to an officer who was sitting behind a desk.

What I'd like to say now is that these people had no sympathy or work ethic whatsoever. Many people came into the room after me and were seen way before I was, even though the officers knew my gate was about to close. When I finally got called over, I was asked these three questions: "why are you only going to the U.S. for a week and not 3 months?" (I HAVE A JOB, DUH!), "what does your boyfriend do for work?" "are you bringing any food to your boyfriend?". After I answered these question, while in tears, I said "can I understand why I'm being held? You made me miss my flight to ask these questions??" and she said to me that I wasn't gonna miss my flight as she would call the gate and ask them to hold on for me, she made me run to the gate like a mad woman only to find out that not only the gate had closed but the lady never called.

I was lucky enough to fly with KLM, which is a great company and put me on a flight the next day without asking more money from me, but I had to spend a night in a hotel in Dublin, and when I went back to the preclearance office to ask for explanation and to get my bag back (as they took it out of the aircraft to inspect it!!!!!!!!) the first lady said "oh I don't know why they held you, I don't have your file!" and she was sympathizing with me as I was crying and asking why they did all that, then a man came up and after letting me speak he started patronising me, saying I should give them at least 2 hours to clear me, I said to him mine was a layover and I only had 2 hours to change flights, I also asked him why I was seen much later than people who walked in after me and he said "they might have had an earlier flight" and I said "HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE? YOU TOOK ME IN AT 11.15 AND MY GATE WAS CLOSING AT 11.45!!!", at that point I was too upset and left.

They never offered to compensate me for my flight or my hotel room, they were extremely rude and the officer who held me in the first place saw me crying at the desk and walked past me with a smirk on his face. When the day after I went through security again (I was in the airport at 6.00 am even though my flight was at 11.45) a very nice officer asked me what happened and cleared me in a matter of seconds, he asked me why they hadn't offered to compensate me and that he was sorry I had missed my flight.

I want to make a complaint, my rights were violated, I was held without an explanation, my documents were taken and I was treated like (excuse the french) a piece of #### and a criminal. If you are flying through Dublin, make sure you're there very early as these instances can happen. My trip was still amazing, but I had one less day to spend with my boyfriend and that wasn't ideal.

I hope no one has to go through this, but I just thought I'd let you know my experience.

I'm so sorry you had to go through this and I can understand from this story this wasn't even on American grounds. However, they can hold anyone without any further explanation. Did you bring any supporting documents to proof strong ties?

I want to make a complaint, my rights were violated, I was held without an explanation, my documents were taken and I was treated like (excuse the french) a piece of #### and a criminal.

The 2nd time I went to see my then-boyfriend (1,5 years ago), I had a layover in Philadelphia. This was two months after my last visit. First time arriving I had no problems with going through customs but this time I had one rough officer that kept on asking questions. And I barely slept, stuttering answers. "What do you do for a living?" "What does you boyfriend do for a living?" "Do you have pets?" "Contract of your house?" (I rented my own apartment, that's what I told truthfully) "How long are you working for your company?" etc etc and after that he asked me to follow him to another room with all my documents in a plastic map. No explanation, nothing. Three officiers were sitting in front of me, looking over my passport, supporting documents and their screen (background check). They asked me three questions there and I was good to pass and go to my loved one. Before leaving, I asked the officer why I was being held and all she could say, "We mostly pick out random people from international flights. You happen to be one of them." I nodded and thanked them as I walked out and trying to catch my flight in time but still upon today I call the bullshit card on the 'being random picked'. I believe small alarmbells go off when you're a foreigner with a boyfriend (immigration suspectation, I guess) or illegal working.

Moral is more that once you're on their 'territory', they can be as suspecious of you as he or she want. They are trained to More people get held there without further explanation, mostly it's a background check. It happens to 2 out of 5 people on the airport, even for a small vacation. Still very sorry you got treated rougher.

Dublin is a cbp preclearance location, so you were questioned there and not when you got to the USA. When you say you're visiting someone, specially if it's someone you're in a romantic relationship with, they like to take you to secondary. Of course, it's up to the cbp officer discretion, some will and some won't.

Unfortunately is up to them, at their discretion, and we have to comply. They do try to accommodate people with earlier flights, but it's not always possible, I myself almost missed my flight, I had a 4h wait between them, because of them

I'm so sorry you had to go through this and I can understand from this story this wasn't even on American grounds. However, they can hold anyone without any further explanation. Did you bring any supporting documents to proof strong ties?

Thank you for your reply. I do understand these are checks that have to be done, but I was treated very badly and the officers that were there to serve people who were waiting their turn just like I was, were laughing and minding their own business. Most of the people in the room with me were complaining and said they were going to take actions. Oh well... Good thing my airline put me on a flight the next day... :)

It makes me sad that people have to go through this in the 21th century. I'm sorry for what you've been through. I understand every country's right and obligation to protect it's borders, but I will never support this being done through humiliation and discrimination.
