You won't go through immigration to board the connecting flight. Essentially, you're domestic after going through JFK.

You will be an LPR as soon as they endorse your immigrant visa at JFK. The endorsed visa acts as a green card for 1 year, with the physical green card arriving via the mail later (and after paying the Immigrant Fee...which can be before or after POE).

Other things make sense too now...

I know I've ticked something about the green card either on the ds260 but i don't think I've paid for it... 

Before would be better for me.... would there be a special form for that please @geowrian?

Once you actually have the visa, you can pay the immigrant fee. Paying before entry would be simplest and get the physical card the fastest.

Security for your second flight isnt interested in your status as it is domestic .. you will just show your passport as photo ID and boarding pass for the flight to Columbus... once you enter through immigration at JFK you are an LPR..

Yes, your Alien registration  number .....  A number ... is on the visa as Registration number.
