Getting married in Jordan

I've tried searching, but I couldn't find anything recent on this subject regarding Jordan. Has anyone married recently in Jordan? No-one seems to have a clear answer on what I need to bring and who needs to authenticate what. I'm a divorced USC with a daughter meeting a Jordanian citizen. I'm assuming I need my divorce papers, name change papers, birth certificate for both my daughter and I, and her custody papers. Do all of these have to be authenticated? Also, does it need to be the Secretary of State, U.S. Department of State, and the Jordanian Embassy in D.C.? We are leaving 8/8, so I'm running out of time!! Of and I'm also working on getting a certificate from my local imam showing when I reverted....Would my daughter also need this? I'm not sure what is needed for the family book.

Thank you for any help and advice!!

I am a USC who got married in Jordan in 2016.  I just needed a certified copy of my birth certificate which I obtained from vital records in  the city i live. This is my first marriage.  You will have to make an appointment US embassy and obtain a document says that you are free to marry. I can't  really answer questions on divorce.  I don't think it would hurt to have certified divorce papers.  If you have anymore questions let me know and I will try to answer.  Enjoy your time there.  I loved Jordan, the people and the food.

Everything went fairly smoothly, minus the back and forth between the embassy and different courts throughout Jordan lol. We were married within a week alhamdulillah and now just to get everything together to file InshaAllah 😊 I hope everything is going smoothly for you!

I am so happy for you!   Many congratulations! Oh yeah, definitely a lot of running around going here and there to get papers, stamps, etc.!  I pray that your continued journey is quick and fast.  We are finally at  the stage his interview has been scheduled.  InshaAllah  it all goes well and according to his plan.  I hope to be reunited with my husband soon.  I can't wait! :) If you ever need help or have questions throughout  this process ask and I will help however i can.

JazakAllah khair and that is great news! InshaAllah the interview goes smoothly and you are reunited soon! May I ask what type things you sent in and how long from sending papers to interview? I heard we don't need to send in detailed conversations, so just to include things like phone records, how we met, got engaged, pictures, and trip info.

To USCIS, I sent 3 affidavits  one  from my sister and best friend, who could tell about the facts of my relationship with my husband and one from his  brother-in-law who brought us together and went with me to Jordan, a few photos of just him and I at places we visited while I was there,  and a few photos of us together with his family when we celebrated the marriage, my trip information, the documents showing I made him beneficiary on my retirement and life insurance plans.  At NVC,  is when I  sent in  more papers/evidence.  Our case has taken longer than most, I filed at at time (December 2016) when it seems like everyone filed and it created a back log.  It took 13 months (approved Jan 2018) to get approved at the USCIS.   I've  been following other time lines, it looks like things are going back to normal.  NVC stage goes much faster but ours took longer because he had issues with obtaining his police clearance.    From filing to interview, it's taken 23 months.  I honestly don't think yours will take even half this time based on what I've been seeing.  Don't let my timeline discourage you in anyway.  It's hard waiting and being apart.  In the end, it will be WORTH IT and we will appreciate each other more and make us stronger!

It definitely does! We have only been apart a month and I already see it making us stronger Alhamdulillah! Allah is the best of planners! Thank you so much for all of the info and I look forward to hearing how your interview goes!! How long did you know eachother before getting married? I keep wondering if age difference (I'm 11 yrs older) and getting married fairly quickly (5 months after meeting online) causes any issues in Jordan. I know it does in other countries, but even within my husband's family there are multiple uncles with older wives so it seems more common there. We also wanted to keep things completely halal, so it makes it difficult to delay anything...and why wait when you know it is right anyway 🙂

We got married fairly quick too.  5 months after meeting we got married.  I'm older than my husband too (I'm 7 years older).  How is what we did, any different from an arranged marriage?   I always worry about the unknowns  and the what ifs.  I unfortunately, haven't been able to make a trip  back to Jordan, although I very much want to, for medical reasons completely unexpected, unforeseen and out of my control.   What has taken place during our time apart, is proof Allah has a plan and is good.  We just have to trust him even when it's hard and we don't see the the picture.  InshaAllah we will come out on top.

MashaAllah! Beautifully said and I completely agree! I think they are understanding about not being able to return often. It is really expensive flying that far and life happens 😊 I just need to get my mind off all of the what ifs and so worrying so much about things I can't control lol Allah knows best and is the best of planners! Only He can decide what is to come 💞

That is the exact outlook you need to get through this trying process.  Sometimes it is easier said than done.  I'm here for you in any way I can be.  It is expensive and not  a short flight where you could just go for a a long weekend.   It takes almost a whole day to get there.  Here's wishing and hoping the best for you and your husband and a very speedy process. 🙏  Trust in Allah!

If you're divorced you need a stamped original copy of your divorce decree from the court where the divorce was finalized. The consulate in Jordan does NOT give out letters stating that anyone is free to marry, they stopped doing that over a decade ago. They have no way to verify whether someone is divorced or single. I went through this very thing way back in 20111 when I was married in Jordan. I had to have a friend fed ex a copy of my divorce decree from because I was told the same information about getting a letter from the Amman consulate. Totally wrong information that cost me weeks of extra waiting and a huge headache because I had to change all of my travel plans.

Thank you for the reply and I hope your visa journey is going smoothly! I actually went to Jordan and got married in August. I took my certified divorce papers, but also had to get them certified at the embassy along with an affidavit letter stating that I'm swearing to the fact that I'm single. We had to take the different papers to multiple different courts before finally being able to get married, but it was easily done within a week alhamdulillah 😊

I had everything they could possibly ask for certified by the state before leaving though, so I'm sure that helped a lot. I also scheduled my appointment with the embassy before leaving for the affidavit letter. I didn't realize they had to certify my divorce papers also, so that delayed things a couple days. I just wanted to also share my experience for anyone else that might be searching for answers 😊
