Hi Everyone,

I had the interview for the K1 Visa in Montreal this morning. Here are the details of the process if anyone is curious. I kept a pretty accurate timeline of the entire process out of curiosity.

7: 40 A.M.

Arrived for a scheduled interview of 8:30 A.M.

The security guards asked for the interview letter and passport. We didn't have the letter because we were notified last Friday of a cancellation for this morning and this was how we got the interview. As I had suspected, we were not on the "LIST" and the security guards were wonderful and called upstairs to sort things out.

7:58 A.M.

We went through security (very thorough with the hand held metal detector) after we were cleared from upstairs and told to go to window 14 on the 19th floor.

8:08

We were given ticket at the counter and told to look for our number.

9:12

Called to window 12. Provided all the necessary paperwork, etc... The lady seemed quite irritated that i didn't have a photcopy of my passport... I couldn't keep my mouth shut and told her that nowhere in packet 3 does it state to have a photocopy of my passport... Luckily it went well. We were given another ticket and explained that we would be sworn under oath, fingerprints, etc.. shortly with another individual.

10:10

Called to room 7 where they took fingerprints, swore me under oath and asked some very simple questions regarding our relationship. I was asked approximately 15 or so questions, pretty straight forward. I was told I was approved and would receive my envelope back within one week.

10:22

Left The building...

Everyone was quite friendly and helpful, the interviewer even went so far as to say that this is a walk in the park compared to actually crossing the border (POE) if you ger a customs agent who is having a bad day... Although the interviewer stressed that he was speculating based on what he heard, he did say I may want to avoid the the temporary work visa once i've entered the US and simply adjust our status once married because people have been granted permanent staus before they've even received their temporary work visa. Just a notee i thought i'd pass along.

All in all it was a nice experience that warranted none of the stress or anxiety I felt the last few days leading up to the interview.

By this time next week i'll be with my finacee across the border...

Congrats!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Here are some of the questions they asked.

Initially i beleived he tried to trip me up by asking how I had met my fiancee April??? My fiancee is not named April, this is her mother's name. I simply answered it was her mother named April and gave them my fiancee's name and we moved forward...

How did you meet?

When did you meet?

Where did you meet? ( I explained I played hockey in the US, this was how we met)

He asked several questions about Hockey in General (not pertaining to the interview)

What does she do for a living?

Where will you live?

What will you do for work?

What POE do you use when you visit her?

How often do you visit her?

What do you do when you visit her?

Does she visit you in Canada?

Do you still live at this address (stated my address in Canada)

When do you plan on crossing the border?

Where did she go to college? (I mentioned earlier she had attended college)

What kind of degree did she earn?

What is her address?

Is this where you will live? (asked a 2nd time)

Congratulations you are approved!!!

It was that simple. Very basic questions.
