Critical information if you are traveling while collecting EI. Trips to the States, even for a tank of gas will be watched.

Bill C-21 would result in the collection of data on all Canadians entering and leaving the country

I think for many of us this would mean no more EI claims for relocating to be with our spouses.

They are building a wall?

No more like popping cameras along every inch of the boarder.

Thanks for the link. This issue is central to a lot of VJ discussions over residency. There is a lot of double dipping that goes on. Many Canadians want to continue to receive child tax payments, GST, universal healthcare while residing in the US. Some Canadians out right lie hoping they can milk the system until they get caught. While I am not a fan of turning over information this bill could possibly save Canada a lot of coin.

There are all sorts of rules that I don't think people follow. When my spouse took what was left of my maternity leave we went to Disneyland. We called EI and reported our absence. Interestingly the EI worker said leaving the country is okay as long as you went on a holiday together. But they had to first verify this. There are many people who are on EI/EI medical then go to the US on a vacation. Unless a person has a valid reason (e.g. going for medical treatment in the US) I agree with the rules a person should not be receiving benefits while out of the country. If your sick you should be sick and if you are looking for a job it's pretty hard to do when you are in Hawaii. But like everything else it is the people who lie who ruin it.

Hawaii might be a better place to recuperate.

A lot of job applications are now on line.

From what I understand EI wants you to stay local in case you are asked to attend an interview or the job starts right away. I think you can still collect EI just not for the length of time you are outside Canada. It's treated as a vacation as opposed to being available for work.

When our immigration took place we were able transfer the claim from BC to the federal systems. I took several phone calls, the benefits were less and by the time we got it all organized she got about $1200 because time was running out. When she was getting EI  in BC they made a note about her pending immigration and specifically warned her not to cross the border during the work week and that they would be watching her crossing. They had her so paranoid about it she wouldn't come visit till Saturday AM and always got up early Monday to make sure she was home by 8.

Totally unnecessary scare tactics on EIs part.  I am sure there have been a fair share of seasonal workers taking the winter off staying in Maui but this was actually interfering with her ability to network and research her industry in Washington state. As it was she had a job here in December after moving down in July.

My take: when BC EI put the fear of God in her, they had no way of knowing whether she crossed the border or not.

note: this info is three years old

I swear,  Canada EI runs on paper and mail and is ignorant that the internet exists. Claims were paper based three years ago.

It is interesting about Disneyland, our experience was the opposite in recommendation.
