Maintaining F1 status after filing AOS

Hi everybody,

 

I and my gf decided to get married, she's a USC, I'm on F1 visa. I am currently a PhD student and have just finished the second year last Spring.

I'm wondering if we submit AOS, can I get to keep my F1 status? There are some priviledge of F1 status that I want to keep.

Once you get a green card, you will no longer have that f1 visa anyway. You can't have both.

Filing for AOS does not change your F-1 status.

 

That said, you still can't leave and re-enter the US until you have AP or a green card (without abandoning your AOS application and likely needing a spousal visa to re-enter).

I'm just concerning about the period right after filing AOS and before getting the GC.

Until you get your GC, you can, but not after getting it.

No reason to mention it as nothing has changed due to filing for AOS.

Making use of AP or an EAD due to AOS would invalidate your F-1 status (but you would maintain a period of authorized stay due to the pending I-485). Getting a green card would also change your status.
