Traveling with AP

Hi guys. I hope everyone is enjoying the summer and not too stressed with the AOS proceedings.

 

I received my EAD/AP combo card 2 weeks ago and I'm traveling to Europe next week. My question is: what documents do you recommend to bring so I can show them at the POE when I come back to the US?

Until this point I'm bringing:

 

1) Combo card, of course.

2) Copies of forms I-797D and I-931 that came with the card and state that the transportation carrier can accept me on board to travel to the US without fear of penalty or fine.

2) Copy of my marriage certificate and its translation.

3) Copies of NOA I-797, AP and EAD approval notices.

4) Copies of I-485, I-130, I-765 and I-131 filing receipts. 

 

Is there anything else that could be needed or useful?

I think your list more than covers anything they might ask for....  Enjoy your trip..

Should I also bring the original documents in case they ask for them or will mere copies suffice?

I'd even carry a business card of an immigration attorney/your own attorney just in case I have to contact a lawyer. But the list is pretty cool! Good luck on your trip.

I'm traveling to Europe too in 10 days. I'll bring all the documents but in originals. 

I'll make copies too!

It's painless to  use AP. I traveled twice last month and was barely asked any question. You just go to 2nd inspection to process your advance parole then you're good to go! They didn't ask for anything else except the EAD card

No, you should definitely bring originals of all those documents. Leave the copies at home. Other people have traveled with copies and gotten the comment from CBP "you wouldn't travel with just a copy of your passport, right?"  The originals are watermarked and have other features that distinguish it as real that won't carry over to a copy.  Take originals.

Thank you. Although I will do that, I think there is a difference between passports and AP documents (the combo card), and supplementary documentation. Please, correct me if I'm wrong but carrying your passport and AP document are actually formal requirements for entry. All other documents are just useful evidence to satisfy the particular standard of the CBP officer if he/she gets picky. Normally you should be able to do it just with your passport and AP document. So it actually makes sense to carry originals for these latter, and copies for the rest (especially considering that they might retain those documents).

 

That said, arbitrariness is normalized in admittance proceedings and it's not worth the risk, so I'll carry the originals but also the copies (in case they decide to keep them).

Yes you're right, but doesn't matter - if CBP asks for them, they will absolutely expect to see originals and give you a hard time otherwise. No need to even bring copies, they won't need to keep anything, they just need the originals for verification purposes.
