SB1 visa with expired reentry permit

I hold a reentry permit which did expire few months ago. I couldn't come back to the us as I was going through medical examination to rule out a tumour. Not completing the urgent medical examination  and coming to the US (where I didn't have medical insurance), was not an option.

Is the SB1 an option for me?

From what I have read, you can not extend an existing SB-1.  You will have to surrender the original one, and apply for a new one.  Based on what you posted, it sounds as if you have sufficient justification.

Based on your question, you seem to have done research on this visa type. It is specific to permanent residents who could not have returned to the US for reasons beyond their control (like your medical situation). Maybe apply for it with evidence from the medical facility showing you being a patient there.

Some more help for you:

 

To qualify for Returning Resident Status, you must show:

•  That you were a lawful permanent resident when you departed the United States,
• That when you departed you intended to return to the United States and have maintained this intent,
• That you are returning from a temporary visit abroad and, if the stay was protracted, it was caused by reasons beyond your control and for which you were not responsible, and
• That you are eligible for the immigrant visa in all other respects.

We got one a year and a half after our travel document expired.  I blogged the whole process under "working and travelling"

It was for my wife.  She accompanied me to KSA for four years.  Step one:  You have to be fully stand alone eligible for immediate immigration benefits, such as marriage to USC etc. 

 

Here ya go.  Not much info about SB-1 out there, so I covered every single step.
