change of term

Hi all,

I would like to ask a question regarding limitations for a change of the arrival date under F1 visa.

I am supposed to start my class this fall term. But due to personal problems, I will not be able to enroll this fall and will have to take the classes next term.

Should I re-apply for a new SEVIS or is it okay to use my previous SEVIS even if I will enter US after fall term?

Thanks!

I don't know exactly how you do it but you can try work with your school. Ask them about Deferring to Future Semester. This is what I found on another university's website. I would contact your school to see if they can do the same thing.

"Contact your admission counselor with a written request for your admission to be deferred to the following semester.

Submit the Immigration Verification Form with updated documentation of financial supportdated within the past 6 months.

Once you have been granted admission to the new semester, an international advisor will defer your I-20."

I don't know if the same applies everywhere but you will need to talk to your school to find out what their procedures are.

Good luck!

As said above, you have to contact the school and find out how to defer for a semester. Whether they will allow that depends on your program.

Then you have to contact the international student office and talk to them. Your i-20 should still work. Did you get the visa? If you haven't, they might have to send you a new i-20 with the same SEVIS but a different start date.

Thank you for the tip. I have already contacted the University. I hope it can be deferred.

Hello,

Thank you very much for the reply. I already got the visa, I also have a plane ticket. My flight is this July. I also would like to know if it's possible to go there this July even if my class will get deferred for future semester?

No, you cannot enter with the F1 because to keep your status you have to be a full-time student. You won't be a full-time student in the fall, which means you will be out of status and your i-20 will be revoked. It will be a lot of trouble.

If you have a visitor visa or ESTA you could use that to visit in July.

If you have "personal problems", you need to solve them in your home country. You cannot enter on an F-1 and not enroll full time

A big NO.

The purpose of your student visa is for you to come to the US as a student.  You can arrive 30 days before your course of study starts.

You can not use your student visa to enter the US and hang out until you decide to go to school in the future.  THIS IS VISA FRAUD.

yep

Good but keep in mind that if you enter US this year on your visitor visa, you can’t simply attend the school from next semester or this semester. Either you have to apply for COS or go back and reenter on your F1 visa to be able to attend school.

Regarding your main question about deferred semester, you need to contact your school and get the new i20. Whether you need to pay again for SEVIS or not, they will tell you. Make sure you tell them you already got the F1 visa. Then you can use your new i-20 (which probably mentions the deferred semester) along with the existing F1 visa to enter US up to 30 days before the semester start day.

OK. So you can visit the US in July, go to your country, and enter the following semester with F1 to start school.

You still have to contact the international office and your program to make the arrangements.

Okay. Just to clarify do I still need to re-apply for a visa? My current f-1 is valid for 5yrs.
