Applying for ITIN with joint tax return

My wife (US citizen) and I are filing our 2017 tax return jointly. To do this I need to apply for an ITIN. I am just wondering if this is the correct way to do things:

>file taxes jointly
>leave section where it asks for SSN blank
>attach W7 (ITIN) application form

If we file jointly, a separate 1040 for me is not needed, right?

Thanks for your help

its a bit complicated to fill jointly if you are living oversea not with her. you still need 1040 to sign and original passport or certified copy(not notarized copy) to submit for w-7. this gonna take 6-8 weeks to get ITIN. I just got my ITIN earlier.
- FYI, My US wife got tax agency for this
- Tax agency emailed to me three forms
     - Declaration letter which described we're doing tax return as jointly, and signed both of us
     - FED1040 is signed by me
     - 2017 M1 is signed by me
Note: all these forms I need to sign then sent it as original to her included my original passport(lucky that her friend came to visit her relatives then i passed mine thru her to my wife) :D
I will get my original passport back when my wife's brother in law comes here next 2 weeks. :)
