Let me share my background story.

Years ago, I was petitioned through a K1 visa, got married --didn't workout and obtained my Green Card through VAWA (self petition) which now I hold a 10 yrs permanent resident green card.

So after so many years I am now engaged and is curious to know if changing my name to my future husband's will have an impact on my immigration records? Also, If I were to file for Citizenship using my previous case will it also affect that?

Because I obtained my GC through VAWA, technically I can be a citizen at least 3 years of being a permanent resident due to VAWA petition. Will that affect that?

I apologize if this is a stupid question. I just talked to somebody at the party and she got me confused about this whole changing name situation. So I just want to ask everyone here for advice.

Thank you in advance.

Ultimately the choice is yours whether you'll change your name now, update your GC and spend the money. Alternatively you could apply for naturalization with your current name and get a name change during the process. Would save you tons of money if you plan to naturalize anyway.

I was in a similar situation as you minus vawa. I got married, obtained 10 GC eventually, divorced and remarried. I took the name of my husband and changed my GC. I can't say I regret doing it because I love my husband and he really loved me having his name. But that money I could have used a year later for the N400 application. I would have definitely changed my name to his during the application. In fact I got a legal name change then too (kept his last name of course and added a middle name I never had). So I went through name changes twice within a short time. I'm a pro now when it comes to updating bank accounts, credit cards, ... lol.

Whatever you decide I wish you good luck and congratulations on your new marriage. (F)(L)
