Honestly, if I was being chased by some idiot I would turn an fight.  Also, doesn’t asylum require one to be persecuted based on one of five criteria/categories?

As to the girl that jogged into the US accidentally, was she planning on claiming asylum?  If not, I don’t really think that is a valid comparison unless you are claiming these folks crossing the US/Mexico border illegally are simply doing it by accident.  I don’t think that is the case.  As to that specific case, I think things were handled properly.  Btw, who actually goes out running with no form of identification.

My point with neither of those examples had to do with asylum but with your statement that anyone who sets foot in another country legally has the intent to break any laws.

Who has running gear with pockets? I can barely bring my house keys along let alone ID.

so if they are not able to claim legitimate asylum you wish to leave them on the boat? Just give them food and water?

Or maybe if people knew they were not going to be taken or allowed to come onto land at that country, they wouldn't start the journey. Liberal unclear immigration policies cost lives

Those of us old enough to recall the Mariel boatlift, know what happened  when we started the one foot on USA soil policy. Cuba dumped a large chunk of it's criminals and mental patients on the usa

I am from one country, I am visiting a second country, I am running along the unmarked border of a third country, If I had no room for proper identification, I would not perform the activity that prevents carrying identification. Being stupid for the sake of running expedience does not make it less stupid

I think I said someone that enters the country willfully in an illegal manner is already breaking our laws, and therefore should be considered unreliable for future immigration purposes.

What part? That is is unmarked or that she didn't know? You live in Michigan so I am assuming you have been near the border? Not all of it is marked.

Vaguely amusing, try running into Mexico and see how you are treated. They do not mess around.

A lot of the Michigan border with Canada is unmarked as it is in water.  There is a long history of border crossings illegally for illegal purposes especially during prohibition.  I also know a lot of folks that take boats out, and they are extremely aware of the maritime borders.  If a US boat swings into Canadian waters on Lake Huron and does some fishing, I am certain the Canadian Coast Gaurd will have an issue.  Relative to the French girl, it was her responsibility to know where she was at as others have said.  I travel to a lot of countries and one of my favorite countries is South Korea.  The one time I did visit the border area, I made sure I didn’t ever come close to falling across accidentally.

Why yes, I have been to Canada what has that got to do with your considering me smug? That is the most witty retort you can muster?

There is no place to run that is "in" Canada? The parties she was visiting did not warn her there was the potential to straddle the border? Should her lack of knowledge of where she was be ignored? While I agree her time held was excessive, but I also think it should not just be ignored, if so people that only find fault would consider that anti-Hispanic behavior or ethnic profiling

It is confusing and when I was in Canada I was lucky that I had my now husband with me who knew were the border was because if I had taken a sea-do or something and gone out by myself I would more than likely have accidentally crossed the border. And I wasn't exactly going to take my passport with me on a boat.

Yes, it was her responsibility to have known where the border was. But being held for 2 weeks seems a bit overkill for something I am sure CBP could easily have identified as not intentional.

I'm assuming your wife's life wasnt threatened while waiting to go through "official channels"...

I remember a woman from the PI whom, while waiting for the visa process, was in a house or restaurant, when rebels opened fire.  She lived to tell the story, but reading her broken English on the matter, it was quite the ordeal.  Nicaragua isn’t the only place it happens.

Most runners, I would imagine.  My wife does it daily.  There is no need to provide ID while out in public.
