Some things about this case:

The capital of our state is a very tiny town, but it has a very lavish and well trained tactical police force. The response time was insanely fast.

The paper is a small town local paper that is a subsidiary of the big one. But it has no know bias. Strictly local stuff including local politics, which in general in that area would be fairly bipartisan.

The criminal is a very disturbing guy (swear I've seen him somewhere before at the airport!). He apparently stalked a woman over ten years ago so badly she moved several states, changed her identity, and now sleeps with a weapon under her pillow. The system did little to protect her from him.

His beef with the paper stemmed from this (they reported on his actions at the time) and he has a large social media presence where he would harass individuals daily.

As in a lot of cases, people were aware of him, and knew that he was the sort that would likely be a mass murderer someday.

He's a federal employee! I wonder if he had access to anything that would help him to stalk people. His father worked for the NSA!

He damaged his fingerprints because I will assume he thought he was going to get away, or frighteningly enough maybe attack other targets.

Hearing some investigative sources say that he is extremely racist, and in jail he is behaving abusively to African American officers and is extremely combative.

What???? Where did he work?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, but it seems as if he had training in cybersecurity and IT stuff so it's unclear what he actually did. He stalked women, reporters at several newspapers, and even a judge. He did plead guilty to harassment of the original woman, so that gave him a record but not a felony (still how did he pass a background check to be employed federally?)... tbh he should have been put away a long time ago. The woman in question still fears for her life.

Not anymore, she doesn’t. ;)

You can have “bad stuff” in your background and still work for the government.  If no one was allowed any infractions with the law, our government would have to shut down.  The job criteria determines what is allowed or not on the BG check.

He might have got the clearance before all this stuff with the woman happened. What it sounds like to me from personal experience and with him only working for the BLS is that he either had a Public Trust or a Confidential Clearance, maybe a Secret but I am doubting that at this point in time. If it was a Public Trust or a Confidential Clearance then those aren't really anything in actuality and usually are valid for 10 years. So he might have got it at some point in time worked for the BLS and then did this #######. Then when or if it came to light he was fired.

Thought I heard he was a current employee though, and not fired. What he did to the woman was pretty serious, and he actually tried to appeal his case to our highest court, so it was reported in the media at the time. I wonder if his coworkers had some red flags... the guy was a whackadoo.

He might still be employed.  I was just referring to the article I linked, where they said “as recently as 2012”, or words to that effect.

He might be because of the Union.
