6 week wait for SSN?!

Hi! My fiancé arrived on June 7th and we applied for his SSN on June 12th. I asked the guy at the SSA to verify if he was in the SAVE database before we proceeded (I know I should have waited the 2 weeks from POE) but he went ahead and sent in our application. He told us that it should take 2-4 weeks (4 weeks maximum) and to call after 2 weeks to check. So we called today and were told before I even gave her our reference number that it will take 6 weeks and the other guy misinformed us.. I'm really hoping that it doesn't take 6 weeks because that's cutting it close for us to get everything done that we need to (marriage, filing for AOS)

my question is, in my state you can get married without a SSN. Should we go ahead and get married while the SSN is still processing and then apply for AOS? or do we have to wait now until the SSN arrives and then rush to get everything done. I'm freaking out. Will getting married and applying for AOS while the SSN is pending mess us up at all? Any help is appreciated.

Around 6 weeks is normal for manual verification. No idea why you have to go through it, but it does happen sometimes. It's not an issue to worry about...just takes longer.

Yes you can marry without an SSN. No issue there. You can file for AOS w/o an SSN as well.

Yes.  I wouldn't wait.  Marry, then file for AOS, EAD, and AP.

Thank you! He’s only been here for 21 days so I’m trying not to worry to much! We will get the marriage license and get that done ASAP and take our time through July putting together his AOS AP and EAD! Thanks again for your help!!

It takes that long to get the card or the number itself? We were going to apply about a week after his arrival, get married, file for AOS. I only have 30 days to add him to my insurance plan and I have to have a SS# for him so I really hope he has it by the time we're married.

We applied the day after POE and it still took 30 days for us with manual verification. As is added my wife to my insurance....they told me today that they are going to charge me since we got married. So i owe already about 2 pay periods of medical insurance and the next one coming...that's almost $500 worth of a useless BC/BS blue cross blue shield btw.

I also have Blue Cross Blue Shield and we just did open enrollment like last week. I asked them how long I had to add my fiance once we're married. They said 30 days from any changes I.E. getting married without charging anything. He arrives July 9th, we're getting married August 8th so I'm hoping we hear something soon.

You don't need to have a SSN to get insured with BCBS. They can ask, but it's not compulsory.

I've been covered since the day I got married and I was not living in the US back then, so I did not have a SSN, and I have no intention of sharing it with them.
