I hope we get a strict constitutionalist. I think for this country to move forward we need to accept that gays having human equal rights is a good thing and that abortion is pretty much settled case law.

I think the last two decisions about not forcing people to pay Union dues and upholding Trumps restrictions on Visas to high terror prone countries were spot on.

Of course their opinions will be a little different this time around...

False equivalency.

Republicans also said Congress has the right to advise and give assent.

And Congress is up for reelection (most of it). What happened to the people's right to choose members of Congress?

There are two components to a Supreme Court appointment. Presidential nomination, and Senate confirmation. The people vote for BOTH of those groups. One was up for election 2 years ago, the other is up now. It should work the same way.

You can't rationalise the hypocrisy here. You can embrace it, and that's fine and probably what the GOP will do, but you can't explain it away. Fortunately for them I don't think their supporters will care if they are hypocrits.

Actually, you are wrong on this one.  The entire Congress is not empowered to give advice an consent, and that is not what was done in 2016, but nice try.

Nope

They harped on how the "people" should have a voice in the matter (which isn't true at all). They have a voice in electing Congress, just like they have a voice in electing the President.

Tell that to Obama's pick, which they blocked purely based on some "voice of the people" argument.

Yep, lame duck president vs. a president that has the potential for one more term.  Do we delay it until 2020?

I have no objections to that. However, you'll be hard pressed to find a hardcore religious right conservative that wants any of those things you and I agree on.

I said it from the beginning. You can embrace the hypocrisy of you like. You don't even have to admit it. It's transparent.

It's an election year. The people are voting for a majority of Congress, who have a say in the appointment process. By McConnell's own words, give the people a voice.

Actually, at the time, conventional thought was that Hillary would make the choice, not Trump.....it was not done to give Trump the nomination appointment.....how soon we forget the facts in order to spin a narritive.

I have said in the past and will say it again, everyone is a hypocrite, and this is even more exposed in Washington.  The party in power is going to do what they want and the minority party will stomp their feet and go to the nearest media friend they can find.  The interesting thing about this entire episode is it really exposed a lot of thee supposed non-biased media folks as hardcore biased members of the press (Chuck Todd, et. al.).

The people are only voting on 1/3 of the Senate.  Last math I did, 1/3 was nowhere near the majority.

The outcome of their decision doesn't matter, they still made the decision to argue that the "people" had a role in the process (which is not mentioned in the Constitution, to my knowledge) by having to wait for an election. It was a "last ditch" effort from them. They may have thought their chanced were slim, but in the end it paid off.

We are saying the same thing. Yes they are all hypocrits. Look back at my post saying Democrats would have likely done the same if given the chance.

We should all be able to admit the hypocrisy. It won't change anything, but we should try to be honest.

Apologies I misspoke.

Still plenty to change Congress based on the "will of the people". We were told their voice mattered in the Supreme Court nomination process.

So if we use that standard, then Congress should never do anything since an election is always right around the corner.
