Foreign References

Would my husband using foreign references for a job application hinder his chances of getting the job? Should we try to find only American references?

If foreign references are all that he has, that's all that he has.  It's not his fault, being new here.

Enlightened Human Resources people will understand and be flexible.

U.S. references will always be preferable, if only because of ease of contact.

A good immediate goal is for him to get any temporary/part-time job here and earn a U.S. reference.

Just to add: From my own personal experience in job hunting after coming here, I listed all of my references from Trinidad where I was previously employed. The only downside to doing so is that the background checks take a tad longer than if you had references in the US.

So, having foreign references is not an issue.

Two out of my three references were foreign when I was applying for jobs here in the US many years ago. It wasn't a problem. My employer was a university and they were used to contacting foreign references.

I'm USC and use foreign references.  Have to - worked outside the country for 8 years.

Make sure they are easy contacts - email addys are great.  Companies (or contracted search firms) DO check them so give the references a heads up that the check is coming.
