Soooo...my fiance had booked his flight (a one way) once he got his passport with his visa in it. He found a reasonable flight for a couple of weeks out, all good and done. He gets a call today from the airline telling him he HAS to book a return flight. it's their policy to not allow non US citizens one ways. Regardless he booked a return, paid an extra 300 so not that great of a deal at all. He's just worried they will question him at POE. I feel like he has nothing to worry about. I told him to not even bring it up unless asked and just explain they told him he had to and then when he's here cancel the return so USCIS doesn't question whether or not he went back before AP is approved. I'm just curious if anyone who has RECENTLY had this experience had any troubles particularly with Atlanta, GA? He's never had any trouble from them but I just like reassurance! :)

Your fiance should've went with another airliner. As long as you provide proof that you're allowed to stay in America for a long period of time, the airliner has to let you fly

Quote
Passengers that book a one-way flight to the USA must provide at check-in:
  • Documentation which states that the passenger is permitted to stay in the USA for a longer period or permanently.

We don't even care now. It's done and over with. I was just asking if anyone else has recently had this experience.

Hopefully he booked the return flight as far out as the airline allowed.  Back when we were doing it, a round trip was a better deal than one-way, so we booked the return leg six months out.  We were lucky that at that time the AOS process was a little faster, so we were able to use the return leg for a new reservation when we went back to visit my new family.  If you can’t do that, then you need to make sure you cancel the return leg so the airline doesn’t put your future husband on some list as having left the country.

Good Luck!

I didn't even ask him when he booked the return. Honestly, we weren't planning on traveling back to England until Christmas 2019 and I don't think they'll allow it that far in advance so we were going to do exactly that just go ahead and cancel it and be done with the issue so it doesn't affect AOS in the future.

Check the airline terms and conditions.  He may still receive some form of credit for a canceled leg for future use.

I will say that CBP will not be concerned with his ticket. It doesn't matter if he comes one-way or round trip. His ticket is not part of the POE equation.  Make sure he cancels his return.

If anything, argue the extra charge with the airlines if the cost is higher because of being closer to the flight. Had he booked a round trip with a couple of weeks out, would it have cost £300 more pounds?  Find a similar flight for 3 weeks from now and see what kind of prices. Then argue it with a supervisors and ask for a refund of extra costs if any.

the airline nickel and dimed you on this one. he has the right to just purchase a one way. No need for 2 way and loose money. My wife took a one way with Turkish Airlines from Kiev for $500 to ATL last month.  Congrats also.

Yeah, when we go to cancel we may try to talk them into a refund for at least the extra bit they charged him for a return. They more or less told him either book a return or we won't allow you to fly with us. He looked for a bit to try and find a better priced flight but couldn't so said screw it and just did it. End up paying $1100 total. Such bulls***

yeah, some airlines are like that unfortunately. I was in Kiev a month before my wife came over for the interview and we asked. POE @ ATL is super easy. Almost no wait. Tell him to keep his brown envelope in his hand so they take him to the tripod area w/o asking. Saves you from those long lines, especially in this times where everyone is flying out for the summer

i posted this several times already.....do SS# first, next get married and do AOS asap. Dont wait, since things are not looking pretty....long wait times and just to get few things done has been a nightmare for us.

SS# took us 30 days, number has been issued, but no SS card in the mail still. as far as AOS, that is done and ready for biometrics in 2 days. Can't get DL in Alabama or state ID, but some other VJ in Georgia have DL already

Yeah, we were going to check the i94 a couple of days after he arrived and if it was updated go ahead and print it out just in case and take it to SS office closest to us and apply, get married August 8th and then send the AOS off within a couple of weeks after. I do have a question about that that you may be able to help me with. Ok since I am the petitioner and the bride obviously my name would legally still be my last name now. Should we wait until my name has changed to his to send in AOS or just do it within days even though my legal name will be what it is now and just include a message that my name will be changed to his soon?

the I-94 was available right after POE. We printed it out few hours later. If you are going to change your legal name to his few weeks after that and file for AOS....i would just put your new legal name. You will have enough time to get all your documents updated by then. And you must send in a marriage certificate anyways. The marriage certificate is what tells them what you go by now. My wife kept her last name so we didn't have to get a new passport and the internal passport in Ukraine also. I think this is more of a hassle to change names and pay for new ID/DL and all that come with it. We go everywhere and nobody has asked us if she is married to me or not.
