DEAR ABBY: This may seem like a dumb question, but I really need to know the answer. Can you get pregnant when your breasts are still underdeveloped?

My boyfriend says you can't, but I need to know for sure. I'm afraid to keep birth control in my room because my little sister, who I have to share a room with, constantly snoops through my stuff when I'm not there. She would be sure to show it to our parents if she found it because she loves to get me in trouble, so I really need to know the answer to this. -- QUESTIONING IN OKLAHOMA

Your boyfriend is mistaken. Breast development has nothing to do with whether a girl can become pregnant. The onset of a young woman's menstrual cycle has everything to do with it. Under no circumstances should you have unprotected sex. Not only will it place you at risk for pregnancy, but also for sexually transmitted infections.

It IS bizarre to say the least. I can't figure the guy out - except that I think he's a shyster. The only thing I can think of regarding the bizarre wigs is that without it, he's just a regular fat guy trying to make money off of suckers.

Is the subject of Sex Education taught in schools in America or is it too taboo?

In England when I was younger the girls were taken into a room and told about Tampax and towels and about sex, I think I was about 11 years old at the time. I know it is the parents responsibility but some parents can not put into words the act of sex.

When I told my children my ex partner was there, he said to me that he could never of done what I done. He found it too embarrassing, the children on the other hand found it very informative. I went through everything with them even my son said he had learn't alot.

The way I said it was kinda funny in away, we talked for about an hour and a half, we were giggling but the children knew it was also a serious subject. I told them about this stuff not to scare them but to educate them.

Yes, the U.S. does have sex education, but to what extent is entirely left up to the state. Some have more and some have less.

I don't even understand the boyfriend's motives, really. Sure, he wanted sex (don't we all?), but without any sort of birth control, she would likely get pregnant and then he would be in a load of hot water along with her. If you wanted to be completely logical about the whole thing (and not even take morals into account), then birth control is the right way to go since it would be the least draining -- monetarily and time-wise -- on both the boyfriend and girlfriend.

I'd rather forgo the sex and wait until some form of birth control was available. The last thing I'd want is to become an unexepected father. But I suppose some people would just like to "take their chances" and roll the dice.

I'm really surprised that the girlfriend doesn't realize that breasts are a secondary sex characteristic. Breasts (or lack thereof) do in no way mean she can either get pregnant or not get pregnant. It's all about the menstrual cycle. I just think it's interesting (and rather sad) that she, and a number of other women today, have such little knowledge of their own body.
