I use a SkyRoam.  It is hit and miss (mostly hit).  It costs $8 a day for unlimited data and it works in hundreds of countries.  That is good when you have stopovers and dont want to use the airport's free wifi.  It isn't perfect but it has been adequate in my 10 or so visits to the Philippines.

That's a good option, but price point seems quite high.

Just when you think you have TDS eradicate,  a new case shows up.

In metro Manila SMART updated their equipment to G5 last summer i was pulling 80 MB downloads, of course once were done in our area they started throttling .. then I was only get 36MB.   It is the data caps that are annoying

As of now I only plan on spending a few days in Manila, I plan on touring the country.

I am thinking the pocket wifi is going to be about the best solution.

Yup.  The one I have works good.   The fact you can use sims from all the carriers makes it easy to get the best signal.

Just make sure it is 4G LTE capable

I agree. $8 a day is steep but the data is usually pretty solid and I don’t need to change sims and miss texts from home.

My T-mobile service gives me free data and text roaming in PI and 100+ other countries, $0.20 min calls if I need them.

One of my cell phone is MetroPCS which is owned by T-Mobile and runs on their towers, but don't seem to work in Philippines.

Yes it has to be a post paid T mobile account. MVNOs that use the network won't work.
