A mastectomy is very different than a breast reduction, which is why (to my knowledge) most surgeons won't jump to do that until there is a legitimate reason.

Yes, doctors are even hesitant to do it when women has breast cancer so they're not going to just randomly do it for someone who wants them taken off.

It seems like there is an organization that has guidelines for transgender care (WPATH) and many surgical centers state they follow their guideline (just googled 4 or 5 and they all referenced the same guidelines...hope my wife doesn't see my search history...)

https://www.wpath.org/publications/soc

It includes a history of therapy and a mental health evaluation. For minors (under 18), it requires parental consent.

So transgenders require mental health evaluation to get cut on? Wonder why that is?

To ensure they don't have any mental health issues that may influence or impact their ability to consent for the procedure. To be honest though I'm only learning about this organization right now, since it's never come up for me (my oldest patients are around 12 to 18 months and that is quite rare, so it's not something I deal with).

From the SOC of the WPATH group:

"As for all of the SOC, the criteria for initiation of surgical treatments for gender dysphoria were
developed to promote optimal patient care. While the SOC allow for an individualized approach to best meet a patient’s health care needs, a criterion for all breast/chest and genital surgeries is documentation of persistent gender dysphoria by a qualified mental health professional. For some surgeries, additional criteria include preparation and treatment consisting of feminizing/masculinizing hormone therapy and one year of continuous living in a gender role that is congruent
with one’s gender identity."

And then

"Criteria for mastectomy and creation of a male chest in FtM patients:
1. Persistent, well-documented gender dysphoria;
2. Capacity to make a fully informed decision and to consent for treatment;
3. Age of majority in a given country (if younger, follow the SOC for children and adolescents);
4. If significant medical or mental health concerns are present, they must be reasonably well controlled."

I know what you mean, and you might be right,  even today.  I know years ago that was true.  Like I said to King after I wrote that, I may have been too hasty posting.   I have a friend whom I trust who will enlighten us.

While on the subject of counseling... seems unfair to me that a woman can go to a doctor and get an abortion, and is not required to inform the husband/father.  But if a man wants a vasectomy, he has to bring the wife along to the counseling session and have her consent.  Pretty backwards, if you ask me. (Again, over 10 years ago, may be different now)

From a quick google search it seems a man doesn't need consent from his wife, though he should tell her in my opinion.... A woman shouldn't have to give birth to a child she doesn't want just because the father says so...

I can't find any written laws in any state requiring spousal consent for vasectomy, though there are many foruma mentioning it.

One case stated the form was "not required".

There may be some doctors who require it individually, but I don't think it is in any way an actual requirement.

You don't need to tell your marital status to your doctor...

The whole thing stinks of internet-based rumor. I still haven't found any concrete evidence.

It might be true elsewhere in the world, but not in the USA.  Reproductive coercion does happen - no one should be forced to have (more) kids if they don't want to.

But the man should tell the woman he's about to get snipped? Seems a tad... hypocritical to me.

Telling is different than asking for consent.

I think it's reasonable for a woman to tell the father if she is getting an abortion. Just like it's reasonable for a man to tell his partner if he is getting a vasectomy. Neither should require consent of the other person, or even a requirement to tell them. They SHOULD do it.

But if they know it?

Mine was over 15 years ago, and I had to bring my wife so the Dr. could hear the words from her mouth that she was ok with it.  If she had objected, he would not do the procedure.

Thousands of doctors in the US - not hard to find another one if you want to do the snip-frozen peas-day off procedure.

That was a requirement from the specific doctor, as far as I can tell. There is no law requiring them to obtain such consent.
