Both my hubby (USC) and I are horticulture majors, so when it came time to decide who was moving where. . . considering that I met my hubby while interning in Oregon at the tree nursery he works at, I guess it was a no-brainer. Me living in Sask didn't really give me much opportunity to work all year round with my degree. Of course, when it came down to it. . . I decided to bust out my biotech minor and am now started a job as a microbiologist. I think I'll eventually head back to being in the outdoors soon, the hort industry here is just to large to back out of in comparison to Saskatchewan.

I guess not...there is only about 4 months without snow! (I'm from Saskatchewan so I can say that!) *smile*

lol, but Autumn rocks in Sk!! 1 reason my parents are looking to move to kamloops, longer growing season, both my parents like to be out inthe yard, growing stuff!! Guess once a farmer, always a farmer, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Derek had already lived and worked in Virginia before we met and really liked it, so we always knew he would be coming down here. He is in law enforcement/forensics and had a bit of difficulty finding a job because most security postions in DC require US citizenship. Well, the ones that pay more than $11 and hour anyway! But in a lovely twist of fate, a job came open in the Canadian Embassy and he has been there since August.

Cassie and Kathryn, we must be triplets because I have my MA in Museum Studies (From George Washington University - Go Colonials!) and have worked at various historic sites and houses for the past 10 years. So DC is a great place for me to be right now. Plus, my French is just horrendous so I don't know how employable I would be in Montreal, where Derek's family lives. But there has been some talk of Derek getting a promotion and being relocated to Ottawa which would be fine with me. Or we are also considering moving up to Burlington, Vermont so we can be closer to both our families.

Ultimately, though, I wouldn't mind both of us becoming dual citizens so we tell can immigration to stuff it!

WOW!

I too worked in historical preservation/museum. It wasn't for a long time, but it did define what I wanted to do with my career. But then I met my hubby and that all changed haha.

Derrekkj, I live near Winchester, VA! and have been looking at going to GWU to get my MA in Museum Studies (just not yet though).

I agree with Kathryn41 that even though there seems like there are more opportunities to work in the history field, the monetary value of it just isn't the same as in Canada.

I'm crossing my fingers I can get something though....and hoping you all do too! :)

I was a factory worker at Chryslers in Canada and moved here to become a Geographical Information Systems Tech/Analyst and now working for a pseudo Government agency.

My husband is GIS Analyst as well! Works in DC now for SAIC but did work out in Colorado for a couple of years. He's curious who you work for? :)

Ah yes, Sask and the great fall. Except for last fall - snowed on Oct.15th and stayed there. My mom said that atleast when the snow melted down this spring the grass was still green!

I have a diploma in Architectural Technology which was based in Ontario. The laws in Ontario state that I can design, draft, and seal for certain classes of buildings up to 3 stories or 900 meters squared. Well as you can guess, that position doesn't exist in the US. I had a hard time finding a job but finally got into a firm down here that allows me to work in my field. I mainly just draft and do administrative duties. In order to be at the same income level I was at in Ontario, I would need to go back to school here and do a 4 year degree. I am sad that I spent all the time and money on my education in Canada that is useless here but I didn't have much choice if I wanted to live with my husband lol.

I am now thinking of just going back to school in a few years for Direct Entry Midwife. I figure that I'm not going back to school for another 4 years to get the same degree that I already have in Canada so I'm going to try something new.

Moving to another country is just one of those things you can't avoid. Some careers transfer and some don't. Unfortunately my career didn't quite transfer the way I hoped.

As with most on here, Hubby and I looked at portability of career which came out as a no-brainer. He (the USC) is a consultant in the oilfield and I am Med Lab Tech. With no oilfield in eastern Canada and the fact he makes 4x what my career pays, guess who moved? :P

I am working presently in a lab job, but not medical. I am hoping to get a job at the local hosptial lab when one comes available.
