No, you cannot leave the country until you get AP. If you leave, you will not be able to get back in.

When you file for the 485 you also file for the AP ( Advanced Parole) and EAD ( Work authorization) combo card at the same time. It is 2 extra forms you fill out and send with the 485, it doesn't cost any more to file for this card and it takes from what I have seen 3-6 months to get the card. Then you can work and travel with this card. Until then you are stuck in the US, well, not stuck, but if you leave you wont be coming back because they will assume you abandoned your AOS/K1.

As stated above, you can't leave the US until you get Advanced Parole, which is usually 3-6 months.

Sent in I-129F September 14, 2016

Visa received in hand April 6, 2017

I-129F to K1 in hand: 204 days (6 months 23 days)

 

Arrived into the US May 10, 2017

Married June 2, 2017!!

 

AOS

Sent AOS packet January 19, 2018

Greencard received in mail June 14, 2018

AOS to Greencard in hand: 146 days (4 months 26 days)

if you leave you will not be allowed to enter again as a temporary resident. You will enter as a visitor. So your k1 visa will no longer be valid!

Apply for your advance parole with your AOS.

Well...try to enter. The OP is unlikely to be permitted entry given a recent AOS application (or K-1 visa used) since that's pretty clear immigrant intent.

K-1 is canceled at the first POE since it is single use.

You don't apply for an I-94. You receive one upon entry and it is updated upon exit.

No.  If you leave the US after entering on the K1 without receiving AP, then you will not be allowed to return to the US.  (Furthermore, an I-94 is your time allowed in the US and has nothing to do with going another country.)

AP and EAD is free when you file an I-485.
