one of our friends got himself ordained as we thought it would be so nice to have someone close to us, marrying us. We have not made any decisions yet as its months away, but is there anyone who has done it this way, married by someone other than an 'official'. how does is work with the marriage certificate? and is it at all advisable? any links with info? ok now i stop, no more questions..

I think it depends. Here in Colorado anyone can sign the Marriage Certificate to make it official, including the marrying couple. So if you were to marry here, all your friend had to do was sign it and that's it.

You go to the registrars, town hall, or where ever they issue a marriage license, then have the person who is authorized to marry you do the ceremony, and they sign it as well as 2 witnesses, then it is sent back to the town hall, county court, ect to generate a marriage certificate.

From where was your friend ordained? Was it the ULC? If so, he/she should be able to get their "minister's kit" which includes marriage certificates. The ULC is legal in all 50 states, and the province of BC in Canada (very possibly others by now since the federal marriage laws changed, but I dunno)

I know LOTS of people who are ordained by ULC, myself and my husband included. All you have to do is sign up on the internet and they can send you certificate and identifcation and everything. After a quick internet search, there appears to be a few churches out there now who do this. I don't know if they are all affiliated or not. Andits all perfectly legal.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

and comply with the state law - in kansas one must provide a letter from the church showing they are in good standing to the courthouse to be registered as able to marry people
