The Trump administration withdrew the U.S. from the United Nations Human Rights Council, with U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley calling the 47-member council “a protector of human rights abusers, and a cesspool of political bias.”

Haley noted the move came after a year where “we did not see any progress.”

Haley threatened the pull-out last year, citing longstanding U.S. complaints that the council showed a “chronic bias” against Israel. But the announcement also came just a day after the U.N. human rights chief denounced the Trump administration for separating migrant children from their parents.

“I want to make it crystal clear that this step is not a retreat from our human rights commitments. On the contrary. We take this step because our commitment does not allow us to remain a part of a hypocritical and self-serving organization that makes a mockery of human rights,” she said. “We did not make this decision lightly. When this administration began 17 months ago, we were well aware of the enormous flaws in the Human Rights Council. We could have withdrawn immediately. We did not do that. Instead, we made a good faith effort to resolve the problems.”

Perhaps we withdrew from the human rights council for the same reasons that North Korea withdrew from the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. Seems like that's what you do when you don't intend to abide by an agreement.

Naw man I think Trump wants to form the "Most Bigly Human Rights Club Ever"

Founding members will be USA, Russia and North Korea.

Can we also build a wall around the UN Building?

Boot them out of NYC.  I am sure that real estate would be worth something.

Perhaps we withdrew precisely due to the hypocritical nature of the council itself.  Hopefully we reduced the UN funding accordingly.

The separation you're talking about is for the safety of the children. Some of these children are involved in trafficking cases, they're not even there with their real parents. And you don't want to put children together with adults you don't know what they are capable of.

I already asked in the other thread - what is the incidence of trafficking among these children? One percent? Ten percent?

While yes it's an issue, my guess is children with actual parents and/or family members far out number them.

Regardless of the details I originally merely said that it makes this awkward. It makes it look bad. We may have good reasons for both things, but it still a little funny that a week after our President spent  a weekend complimenting and sucking up to a world leader with one of the worst human rights records we then withdraw from the UN council.

Just awkward. And a little funny.

Does it matter if it is 1% or 10%?  Shouldn't we error on the side of caution to try and keep even a single child from being trafficked?

Absolutely. But we should also err on the side of caution when it comes to separating real families.

I'm not advocating letting those kids and their parents roam free. You can investigate while they are together. If you have evidence that they are being trafficked then remove them. We shouldn't remove them first just "assuming" that it's safer for them.

This discussion is better suited to the other thread though so we should stop here.
