You cannot file an I-90 for a replacement card within 90 days of expiry of a 2yr card. It is in the I-90 instructions. Save your money, it will be wasted.

Suggest you file your I-751 the very day eligible (you will need to enclose a scan/photocopy of your 2yr card when you file - you do have a copy right??)

 

Wait for the extension letter, and go to an infopass appointment, and explain you have lost the 2yr card so the letter is useless and you require a stamp. Of course this may require adjusting your travel plans if you don't get your letter and an appointment quickly.

 

@shell20had some experience of this I believe when her 2yr card was stolen - she may have some knowledge that may help.

 

 

This is exactly what I'll have to do. I'll have to cancel my travel plans until I can get the extension letter and stamp.

I couldn't believe when I read 600 dollars for a replacement card, but I checked and it costs 455+85=540. That is insane, now I know why you don't want to replace it. When my fiancee gets her card I was going to put it in my gun safe, but at that price it is getting an armored car escort to my bank and straight to the safety deposit box to never come out until ROC, actually probably not then either because I just need to send a copy. I don't think it will ever come out of the box again. And they expect you to have this on you at all times, not going to happen, too many possibilities of bad things happening. I'll just keep some nice color copies around of the front and back. Cheaper to bail her out of an ICE detention center than replace the card.

Yeah, its absolutely ridiculous! We are not "below the poverty line" but we also don't just have $600 lying around either :-(

Not for a piece of plastic that costs less than a dollar to make. I'm not saying it Should be free, but within reason. Even if you lose your passport, a pretty important travel document, you can have a new one in your hand in 24-48 hours for around 180 to 200 tops.

This is exactly what we did. My wife never had her physical 2 year greencard (it was lost in the mail, the post office blamed USCIS and USCIS blamed them - no one could find it). She traveled on the I-551 stamp and in fact, she was able to her passport stamped a second time.

Why don’t you just make an infopass appointment, explain the situation and ask what to do.

Here's how that hypothetical situation would play out:

 

IF you tried this, then POE would expect to see a copy of the (false) police report you filed, along with proof of (falsely) notifying the consulate abroad that you "lost" your card....which is what USCIS website advises people to do in the event of a lost greencard.  In addition to a currently filed (and paid for) i-90 to replace your GC.  

 

Probably not the can of worms you want to open by falsifying police/consulate reports.  In addition to lying to an immigration official.

 

Even with all that,  you still wouldn't be able to board the plane until your replacement GC is in your hands.  

 

If you were actually able to board the plane (a 1% chance), POE would likely just turn you right back around again until you had the replacement GC to enter.
