You can't file an I-90 so close to expiry of your 2yr GC so relax on that count.

 

Suggest you file your I-751 the very day eligible (you will need to enclose a scan/photocopy of your 2yr card when you file - you do have a copy right??)

 

Wait for the extension letter, and go to an infopass appointment, and explain you have lost the 2yr card so the letter is useless and you require a stamp. Of course this may require adjusting your travel plans if you don't get your letter and an appointment quickly.

 

@shell20had some experience of this I believe when her 2yr card was stolen - she may have some knowledge that may help.

 

 

Yes you can leave the US without your card without issue, but you will have massive problems boarding a flight back -  you would have to go to am embassy for a transportation letter which is expensive and a hassle, so strongly advise that you don't leave the US until you have your documents in order.

Not strictly true.

The expired card is not always taken when a stamp is issued, and if you have no extension letter (it never arrives for example) / an extension letter but no card after filing a I751 but a need for proof of status,  they will issue a stamp.

If you do play smart, I am sure we will be seeing a new thread about you ranting how CBP didnt allow you to enter or most probably a thread asking help saying "lost my CR1 card but I have a ROC interview in few days and I am out of America. Help"

Takes about a month. It's meant to extend your green card valid status for another 1 year. But like someone mention you'll need a stamp also.

Hence, the reason I'm here asking advice and seeing what other people have gone through... It's important for me to get home ASAP and I don't have a lot of time and a lot of cash available to me right now...

The extension letter is your receipt for filing.

It extends your pysical card validity for 18 months, but without the card the letter by itself is useless.

 

Once you have that letter however, you can be issued a stamp, which is good by itself as proof of status and for travel purposes. Once you have the stamp you do not need the letter or expired card to travel.

 

Edit - I did this myself with my second I-751 filing. Receipt/extension letter issued, but for a card that expired 2.5yrs previously so effectively useless. Went to an infopass, got a stamp, no issues re-entering the US.

So maybe my best bet is to file for the replacement card and then get the stamp? How much does the stamp cost? How long would that all take me? Sorry for the million questions and I appreciate all of your advice and information

Stamp is free, if you get to that point of just the stamp.

Stamp is free.

 

You cannot file an I-90 for a replacement card within 90 days of expiry of a 2yr card. It is in the I-90 instructions. Save your money, it will be wasted.
