Presumably the fact that there is an English test as part of the naturalization process.

The English test is to read and write one sentence. Yes I'm a naturalized citizen.

You are doing yourself a great disservice by not having made the effort to become fluent in English.  Too many well paying - or even average - jobs require it as an essential skill.  There are many community programs designed for immigrants to gain English language and civics skills.

And people wonder why others are opposed to immigration by individuals unwilling to assimilate into the American experience.

Naturalization Eligibility Requirements

Before an individual applies for naturalization, he or she must meet a few requirements. Depending on the individual’s situation, there are different requirements that may apply. General requirements for naturalization are below.

  • Be at least 18 years old at the time of filing Form N-400, Application for Naturalization.

  • Be a permanent resident (have a “Green Card”) for at least 5 years.

  • Show that you have lived for at least 3 months in the state or USCIS district where you apply.

  • Demonstrate continuous residence in the United States for at least 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing Form N-400.

  • Show that you have been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months out of the 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing Form N-400.

  • Be able to read, write, and speak basic English.

  • Have a basic understanding of U.S. history and government (civics).

  • Be a person of good moral character.

  • Demonstrate an attachment to the principles and ideals of the U.S. Constitution.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

The entire interview is conducted in English. Hard to answer questions properly if you don’t know what’s going on. There’s a civics test too, also in English, correct? So the full effective extent of the English test goes beyond reading and writing one sentence, in fact uscis notes that the officer conducting the interview tests your ability to speak English during the interview (separately from the reading and writing one sentence, which are to test your ability to read and write the language, not your ability to speak it). Have certainly seen reports of people being denied naturalization on the English language basis because they couldn’t understand the spoken part of the interview.

Speaking Test

Your ability to speak English will be determined by a USCIS Officer during your eligibility interview on Form N-400, Application for Naturalization.

Reading Test

You must read aloud one out of three sentences correctly to demonstrate an ability to read in English.

Writing Test

You must write one out of three sentences correctly to demonstrate an ability to write in English.

I am sorry but it really annoys me when people are given the opportunity to come to this country and do. They become citizens after at least 3 years but6 do not have the inclination to learn english. To me that shows an indifference to this country

Sorry you are annoyed.  Although, it's kinda weird that you are annoyed by people being given the opportunity to come to this country and do.  Since you are naturalizing, weren't you given the opportunity to come to the land of the free and you did?

Your English is perfect just like you.  Perhaps next time, you will construct better sentences.

I can diagram the sentences just fine.  What do you think is the problem?

Ed is annoyed that people are given the opportunity to come to this country and they do.  It seems that Ed is more upset that people are given the opportunity to come to this country and fail to assimilate by not learning English.  His original sentence implies he is annoyed by them simply taking the opportunity to come here.  Hope that helps.

The US is a "melting pot" with each immigrant adding to the experience.  If one did not want to melt into the culture of the country but remain with the language and customs of their home country, why did they bother to come - for the money, benefits, ...whatever?  Now you understand the  anger towards ethnicities which want to remain isolated but take what the hard working immigrants before them created.  I am not saying either group is right or wrong just that the attitudes are understandable
