Correct, which a careful read of the I-864 instructions would make clear.  Study of those instructions will be critical to your ultimate success.

Can you reference the relevant part of the instructions i'm missing.

No.  I want YOU to carefully study ALL the instructions, so you'll know WHAT you don't know.  I don't know what ALL you are missing.  I only know of ONE thing you didn't see in the instructions.

Look man, I'm not sure what the deal is but seriously, #######. After reading for the umpteenth time the instructions believe it or not, and doing a keyword search for for the relevant keywords, I see nothing stating that I will enter the total income from a jointly filed tax return.  In the future, I will assume you want me to read the directions for any question asked, so feel free to stop replying that I should study them.  You can just ignore my post, but please stop telling me to read the instructions.

Page 9, second paragraph of I-864 instructions.  Read carefully, interpret literally, and answer accurately.

For purposes of this affidavit, the line for Total Income on IRS Forms 1040 and 1040A will be considered when determining income. For persons filing IRS Form 1040 EZ, the line for adjusted gross income will be considered.

Thank you.  That wasn't so hard was it.  My confusion was I was looking for strict wording regarding jointly filed taxes.

Whether is is good to feed a man a fish instead of teaching him to fish is not a matter of which is easier. ^_^

You don't read instructions looking for answers to questions necessarily.  You read instructions to understand and follow instructions.  The same wording is in the I-864a instructions as well.

This is WHY my signature includes the anonymous quote it does.  Check it out.

Just as you advised me to understand the difference between n/a  and none, you could make a distinction between not reading and not understanding. Thanks again for the help.

Because I "understand" that the difference between reading and reading carefully IS understanding. ^_^

My mom recently got her long form birth certificate to submit as part of her joint sponsor packet with the i864.  She was surprised to see that on the birth certificate her name is written as VICKIE, but at some point in her early life, she stop using the final e and only went by VICKI.  VICKI is the name on all other correspondence, passports, Driver's License etc. According the her she will have to go through a lot of trouble to get that changed officially and it would not be a quick fix and would likely include retaining the help of a lawyer.  Will this be an issue in the opinion of experts here. TIA

It's probably OK but there's no way to be certain it will not be an issue.  With matching dates of birth on all documents, I suspect it will be OK.

I would let it go.  You don't mention the country.  In any of the former Soviet Union countries it is well known that there usually are multiple correct spellings when transliterating from the original Cyrillic.  The absence of a letter is pretty easily explained.  If it comes up, just give the same explanation you gave here.
