Not sure if there is already a thread about the World Cup, but I thought as a multi-national forum the competition should be a passionate subject.

Since the US did not qualify, my go to team is England. England has been my second favorite team since probably forever (I like to thank JK Rowling for starting my obsession with the country back in 2001). My pick to win is Germany. I think their squad is as experienced as it was four years ago, but I still think its pretty strong. If they end up playing Brazil at any point, it could be bad for Germany; Brazil will play with a vengeance trying to make up for their 7-1 home loss. I also have a soft spot for Germany as a whole, though, as my older sister dated a guy from Germany for almost five years. I will also be cheering for Iceland because I think it's great they are playing in their first World Cup. A lot of the people I've talked to are Iceland supporters for that reason.

I don't follow soccer as closely as others do....I was just shocked that Italy did not qualify.

Not sure who I'll root for....US is out, Canada is out.  I suppose as a member of the Commonwealth I *should* be cheering for England as a default lol

Probably will cheer for Brazil.

As a civilised Englishman living amongst the heathen Scots most of the natives around me are devout ABE supporters.

I'll be happy to support England while they're still in the competition, so that'll be until about 10 minutes after kick-off in their first game.

Do I think England will win? Not a chance.

Not really a footy fan anyway, prefer rugby

My parents have been hosting an exchange student from Italy since August. When the US didnt qualify she thought it was hilarious. She then was devestated shortly after when Italy didn't qualify. I was also shocked. They've always performed well through friendlies, the UEFA Cup, and World Cup.

My fiance also prefers rugby. His mom is Welsh and dad is English so anytime the two play eachother he says it's full on war. He sides with his mom.

I was very surprised to hear that Italy didn't qualify... But I am happy that them losing resulted in Sweden making it. But yeah, it feels weird because Italy is a country that somehow always end up in the world cup.

that was an amazing game. Boy when Mexico scored, the Germans in the bar were going crazy and they were literally yelling at the TV.

Gosh during the match time, I am always at work (except weekend). We have TV at cafeteria and Worldcup is on all the time but I don't think my boss would be happy seeing me hanging out in the cafeteria instead of working :) .. Weekend is all planned for a soccer matches (my wife gives me excuse from all my duty of being husband and spending time with her during world cup because she knows I only watch soccer world cup and it only happens once every 4 year. The last world cup we were dating, this world cup I am home and she is traveling with her Girlfriends in Croatia.  All the ladies that went off on the trip are close friends and all husbands are now friends to each other. Now we have our own group soccer loving husbands and we have already worked out venues and beer runs. )

My money is for Argentina (I assume this will be last world cup for Messi). During the Argentina match, I have cleared my schedule (meeting, discussion etc) so that I can clock out and just watch the game. Well, I will put in my additional 90 min after work hour.
