Whatever it does mean, nominations seem to mean even less.

"Nominations for the world’s most coveted prize are open to lawmakers, academics and researchers from around the world. The Nobel Committee in Oslo typically receives hundreds of nominations each year, and past candidates have also included Russian President Vladimir Putin and Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro. A record 330 people were nominated this year."

He's in a wonderfully select group, which includes Putin and Castro.

Agreed.  Personally, I could not care less about the Nobel and the fact that there are so many august folks nominated, makes my indifference to that award even more secure.

I tend to appreciate it more now when someone is actually deserving, and more so when it's not a celebrity or politician, or something as silly as the EU winning. I really think they've gotten so far away from the intent of the Nobel prize that they should just end it. Not just in the peace category either. Maybe replace it with a popularity contest format.

Maybe like Eurovision?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Not that special to get nominated: pretty much anyone can get nominated.

I found this article where it says they regretted their decision to pick Obama as the recipient of the peace price. Feels like they thought he was going to be able to do a lot of things that never happened.

A lot of people felt that way. It doesn't really make sense to give awards for accomplishments before they occur. At that point they are not accomplishments, just plans. You know what happens to plans.
