Do not purchase anything until visa is in hand unless you know you can without charge change the flight easily.. So many people have lost money on non refundable or unchangeable flights.

Never had much issue with entry/exit in Vietnam so I doubt you will.

thanks cyclone for your response. vietnam requires 30 days visa even for US citizens. Do you think buying one way ticket is safe? vietnam communist government could be very strict. Any problem entry/exit with one way ticket?

Strict? Not really - pretty lax IMHO. I’ve been traveling in/out for almost a decade.

Vietnam is more capitalist then communist these days - chasing the $$$$$.

You could be exiting overland so r/t not necessary. Once you have a valid visa you are good to go unless you go past the number of days your visa is good for.

I'm a different country but working on the same thing - I have already purchased my own ticket (I have work so I can't stay in Ghana that long).  If he gets visa in hand in time, we will buy his ticket then, and just beg the airline to put us together :).  My fare is flexible so I could make some changes to my own reservation, but we'll see how it goes.

Other choice is a gamble.  Book your and her ticket for 2-3 weeks after the interview date and cross your fingers.

Why risk losing that much money if her visa isn't ready within that time frame? Why not just wait and see what happens.

You're in the same situation as I am,  Let me explain how I'm going about it, I bought a single round trip ticket to Moscow, my return flight to the USA is in mid September, If everything goes as planned and her visa is issued prior or during my stay, I simply try to book the same flight, in the event the flight is fully booked, I change the dates to a flight that's available for both of us, cost to make the change; $100..  And since I usually fly business or comfort class, seats are often available.

Where is money lost?  Re-booking fees are usually pretty reasonable.  Last-minute flights?  Often not so.

It IS a gamble (with the same worst case outcome of scrambling to get the flights inside the 30-day stay limit if his trip is started within a few day of interview.
