Gas station owner told to raise prices

MERRILL, Wis. - A service station that offered discounted gas to senior citizens and people supporting youth sports has been ordered by the state to raise its prices.

Center City BP owner Raj Bhandari has been offering senior citizens a 2 cent per gallon price break and discount cards that let sports boosters pay 3 cents less per gallon.

But the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says those deals violate Wisconsin's Unfair Sales Act, which requires stations to sell gas for about 9.2 percent more than the wholesale price.

Bhandari said he received a letter from the state auditor last month saying the state would sue him if he did not raise his prices. The state could penalize him for each discounted gallon he sold, with the fine determined by a judge.

Bhandari, who bought the station a year ago, said he worries customers will think he stopped the discounts because he wants to make more money. About 10 percent of his customers had used the discount cards.

Dale Van Camp said he bought a $50 card to support the local youth hockey program. It would have saved him about $100 per year on gas, he said.

I agree with both of you but that's not reality. There are selective discounts everywhere. Anyone living in FL sees it daily - senior citizen discounts.

but this is gas, the prices are higher and in some cases hurting alot of ppl.

resturant prices are not going up and are not harming ppl, i dont care that grandpa gets 10% off his biscuts and gravey, i do however dont think its......... you know what, its only 2 cents, i guess i really dont care anymore

Heck a messed up if only few get gas discounts let the rest of us suffer paying high gas prices lol.

I don't like paying more for gas but to me it's not that big of a deal considering even at $3 per gallon we're still lower than a majority of the world. IMO we were spoiled with the 'low' prices we were paying. It's probably not a popular opinion but I'd like to see gas tax increased to fund alternative fuels and ways to make cleaner and more efficient vehicles.

I don't see the harm in letting the older people get a little discount on gas....

most older people have to live off a set amount of money each month...

Old folks drawing pensions shouldn't pay any fuel taxes at all, IMO.

They didn't in the UK until Gordon Brown decided he couldn't keep his grubby little hands out.
