Hello and thank you for taking time to read this.

I'm in the process of filing N-400 for my wife and step-son, they came in the USA as K1 and K2.

I'm just wanted to know when I file the N-400, for my wife and list her son.

Sorry I know this may have been asked several times.

1) What do I do for the stepchild?

2) Do I have to pay another fee?

You do not need to file for the child.  Once his mother becomes a USC, he will automatically become one if he meets the 4 requirements of the Child Citizenship Act.  1.  Be under age 18, 2) be a green card holder, 3) have a USC parent, and 4) live with the USC parent.

Once mom naturalizes and gets her Naturalization Certificate and US passport, your stepson 6can file for his US passport as proof of his US citizenship.   Your stepson could also get the N-600 Certificate of Citizenship, but it's not required and cost $1000.  Some people get the N-600 because it makes them feel better.

The N600 document is confusing and hopefully we can get a FAQ added to the visajourney about it, however here is what the n-600insr say.

You can file Form N-600 at any time if you became a U.S. citizen at birth or after birth, but before you turned 18 years of age.  Filing this application is NOT a request to become a U.S. citizen.  Filing this application is ONLY a request to obtain a Certificate of Citizenship which recognizes that you became a citizen on a particular date.

The confusion for most people is the "after birth, but before you turned 18 years of age" where the before you turn 18 years of age applies to the after birth not the "can file Form N-600" at the beginning of the sentence.  In many cases people prefer to obtain the Certificate of Citizenship since it doesn't expire like the passport can.
