Griffith Park Fire Flares Up, Evacuations Ordered

A wildfire roared across rugged brush-covered hills in the city's sprawling Griffith Park on Tuesday, triggering evacuations of homes and some of the city's most famous landmarks as dangerously hot and dry conditions created tough firefighting conditions.

A wall of flames raced across ridges and jumped fire lines late in the evening as the fire drew closer to homes and the Griffith Observatory. Authorities have ordered evacuations of homes on the southern edge of raging brush fire in LA's Griffith Park.

Evacuations are also in effect in the park's Vermont Canyon area, which includes the Los Angeles Zoo, two golf facilities, a school and the Autry Museum.

Hundreds of firefighters and five water-dropping helicopters rushed to Los Angeles' landmark park - a mix of wilderness, cultural venues, horse and hiking trails and recreational facilities set on more than 4,000 acres on the hills between Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley.

"The fire has jumped multiple ridges, canyons and roads and is getting out of control," said David Schaefer, a city firefighter-paramedic. "The ashes from that ridge are about to start falling. If I were you, I'd be leaving here soon."

About two-thousand customers are without power tonight in LA's Los Feliz neighborhood, near where a brush fire is raging.

The DWP says it's unclear whether the fire had anything to do with the blackout, but crews were on scene trying to determine the cause.

Power went out in an area bordered by Vista del Valle to the north and Griffith Park Boulevard to the east.

Officials say they can't yet predict when power might be restored.

So far no homes have been lost. The gardens of Dante's View near Mt. Hollywood are gone. Griffith Observatory is not threatened for now. The Greek Theatre is close to the fire, but ok so far.

Griffith Park Fire Now 40 Percent Contained

600 Acres Scorched, 300 Residents Evacuated Tuesday

(CBS) LOS ANGELES Hundreds of firefighters continue to battle a wildfire that has burned over 600 acres of brush in the Los Feliz and Hollywood Hills area of Los Angeles. The blaze also prompted the evacuation of at least 300 people.

Los Angeles City Council member Tom LaBonge said the fire was the city's worst since the Bel Air blaze of 1961.

As of Tuesday night, the fire was declared 25 percent contained. However, the wind changed and the extent of the containment became uncertain.
