You won't get it upon entry, you will have to apply for it at the social security office a couple of weeks after you enter. Technically yes, it is temporary. There are three types:

Type 1: Unrestricted, can work anywhere

Type 2: Restricted, can work but only with permission from DHS (in the form of an EAD)

Type 3: Can't work, given to those who need a social security card for other purposes like opening a bank account, obtaining driving license etc.

My understanding was that those who entered on a K1 would be given the third type, but as @TNTidaho explained, we get the second type, which makes perfect sense.

You never have to get it reissued but every time you fill out an I-9 the social security card and d/l won’t be sufficient due to the language on the card

YMMV

I know that sorry poor wording on my end. We had planned on going and applying about two weeks upon his entry for the SSN/card then getting married. I just didn't know we had to renew or however they word it after green card and once he gets the EAD he doesn't need to renew the card wait until he has his green card, right?

You go earlier than that, so if there's a problem you have enough time to get it fixed.

It happens...

Social Security Administration does authorized anybody to work. For employment you need to complete form I 9/ E-Verify. They will let the employer know that you aint authorized to work

I think I've read here that it is now quicker than that, just go online to check your I-94 status. Once it's been updated it's safe to go to the social security office.

So the ss card you get upon entry of US on k1 is only temporary? We need to reapply for another one when we get a green card?

It is not temporary in the sense of having an expiration date. You will not apply again,  as in start over with your I-94, visa, and get a new number. But anytime your immigration status changes or your name changes, it is best to go in and inform SSA.

I have been to SSA three times. 1) with K1 visa to get issued a SSN, 2) with greencard to show I was a permanent resident, 3)  with naturalization certificate because I was a US citizen. Each time, they mailed me a new version of my card because they changed my name slightly on the card to match immigration records. They said they are required to match the name on USCIS documents. The changes were from no middle initial,  to middle initial, to full middle name because that's how USCIS had issued my documents.

I applied for a social security number two days ago using my i94 after entering on a K1 visa and have been told it'll arrive in the mail in about 1-2 weeks.

I understand that this will be a temporary social security card and it will specify that I am unable to work, and that I will have to wait until after adjustment of status to get an EAD in order to start working.

However, if by some miracle of God the lady at the social security office made a mistake while inputting the data from my application form, and the card comes in and it does not specify on the back that I am unable to work, i.e. it is a regular social security card, what will happen then? Do I have to report it to them? Do I have to return it? Can I just start working and not wait for EAD?

Asking for a friend. Thanks guys.

LOL...asking for a friend. And to answer your question...NO THEY CAN'T work until they get an EAD or the Greencard...which ever comes first (my wife got her green card before getting either EAD or AP).  Doesn't matter if you have a SSN...and if they made a mistake.
