Perfectly normal, you can never be sure of approval anyway until the status shows "issued". Even if they approve you at the actual interview.

It's not uncommon for the CO to not state that you are approved or not. You can always ask, although they may not give a firm answer sometimes still.

Taking the passport is a good sign and it sounds like everything went fine.

Although nothing matters until the visa is issued, though. One can be "approved" at the interview and still get refused the visa if some final processing discovers an issue.

This is typical Philippines Mentality.

Why they can't just ask? Sir/Madam am I approved?

Instead they are taught:  Fall in Line, Never ask questions, and never question authority

Odds are she is apporved

Just when you think you have TDS eradicate,  a new case shows up.

Very common/normal.  As @geowrian stated even if told  "approved" at the interview, actual approval isn't until you see "ISSUED" on the CEAC status.     And yes the embassy will keep the birth certificate, do make sure to get a couple copies from PSA before traveling to the USA.

OK here is part of what happened at my fiancées interview in Manilla.  my fiancée had her interview Monday morning and she was never asked to give the Affidavit of support. only nso,,cenomar, and nbi. neither the Pilipino counselor or the American CO asked her about my income or job or the Affidavit OS and supporting documents? the interview went well, they kept her passport and just said "thank you you're finished" she was given a paper as she left with info to register her address for delivery. I'm confused why they never asked for AOS?? Would like to hear comments about this.

This is not uncommon with Manila COs. They very rarely ask for an I-134 for a K-1 visa.

Not asking for the Support documents is becoming more and more common.  Back in 2014 they changed the wording of their instructions letter to read MAY instead of SHOULD in this regard. A month or two ago they dropped the instructions letter and started using the online checklist which jumps between MUST and MAY and is totally confusing   .. still .. since 2014 the embassy has been very sporadic with asking for the I-134 and supporting documents .. but that doesn't mean they don't ask.

(that is my best Cliff Claven imitation that I can do on short notice ;)  )
