I think this is because there is a lot more applicants lately. A lot of people who were eligible for AOS but had put it off for one reason or another decided  to get it done given the new political climate and administration. At some point in the Obama administration AOS wait times had come down to between 3 to 6 months and yet in the year and a half of this administration it shot back up to 12 to 24 months why?

I have zero desire to play guessing games like about why individuals choose to do things or not.  My anecdote about wait times increasing is due to there being way less people to do work even with less work to do. People would have to drive over a state or two or three for their biometrics and interviews.  Aos would still be submitted and then workers would have to determine if extenuating circumstances were met.  

Maybe I'm wrong and timeframes wouldn't increase.

 

Regardless it's all speculation.  USCIS will NEVER get rid of AOS.

This is true.  Congress would have to do it.
