What is a certified translation for the NVC?

Like for a birth certificate. We can translate it perfectly and write a statement signed by one of us that the translation is accurate and that the translator is competent to translate. Is that enough, or does the NVC want us to track down professional notary translators? It's just Spanish, not some crypto language.

Yes, It has to be a Notary Person, or better yet, some higher authority. For example, in Bangladesh, you can get your documents notarized or "attested" from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This attestation is valued the most, by Embassies in Bangladesh.

IMHO, translation done by a certified translator should be sufficient. 

For AOS it is possible to translate documents yourself, but I’m not sure if it applies to visas

this issue comes up very often. Spend the 2 cents on a certified translator and don't get caught later w/o a stamp or something that the CO could say this is not good enough translation. IMO.

If you were born in Israel you can get an official birth certificate in English

Note that unless the document is NOT already in the local language of Israel, you don't need anything translated for the NVC stage.  If you actually DO need something translated it's best to get Consulate specific advice on it.  While any individual can translate and certify a translation, there are exceptions to the rules.  For example, for China, the translations must come from the government Notarial Office, and for Montreal, even though French is ONE of the official languages of Canada, they will NOT accept a document only in French.

This is incorrect, for US immigration.  There are some country specific exceptions like China, but otherwise, the translator can be anybody competent to translate.  The translator "certifies" the translation.

 

IMPORTANT NOTE:.  If the you are born in Israel and interviewing in Israel, you don't need your birth or police certificate translated at this stage.  Only if your birth certificate is not in the local language where you will interview, or in English, would you need a translation.
