So I have my medical and interview booked for later this month, with the view of entering US next month if all goes well.

My question is regarding a name change by deed poll. It seems to be much easier to legally change your name by deed poll whilst in the U.K. I am a trans man, legally (and unfortunately) living by my deadname. In an ideal world, I’d like to change my name prior to getting married but I am not sure how realistic this is. If I legally changed my name by deed poll in the U.K., would it cause issues with my potential visa? Is it best to wait until I enter the US? So many questions.

I think I saw you at the embassy yesterday.

I changed my surname by deed poll 25 years ago - briefly, I no longer wished to use my father's surname. It hasn't caused any problems in the visa application - they wanted evidence linking my birth certificate to my current name. I have a change of name deed filed at a solicitors from 25 years ago. But I also sent a letter to USCIS explaining how having a National Insurance number in the UK is a unique identifier for a citizen.

DM if you like, I can send you a copy of the letter I sent USCIS. I don't know the process for changing your name in the US but I have experience of doing it here in the UK and it has not caused any issues.
