there is plenty of websites and employment agencies that specialize in assisting you in obtaining employment if you cant find one.  LinkedIn.com, Monster.com, Manpower is an employment agency.  Just be aware that employment agencies have a catch when you do get hired and  they dont release you that quickly when you find a company to work for. Aside, you are in New York. No offense to anybody here, but if you can't find employment there with all kind of offices and resources....you are in the wrong country. Plenty of immigrants get to NY and find almost right away a link to a job/career and move on.

Thanks all again.

Come back to this thread and let us know of your progress!

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Engineering jobs in New York city are not that plentiful though. Not much manufacturing there so one huge chunk of what an engineer can do is gone.

Agree, also I think a sweeping statement like “lots of jobs available” doesn’t take into account that certain fields like the OP’s may require local certifications first.

I am thinking to start Computer Aided Design-Certificate (Auto Cad) in Community College in NY in September and will do preparation for Certification of "Engineer Under Training". In addition to that I'll do part time Job. For scholarships I didn't qualify as I have arrived in US two months ago and for Masters I have no Finance. I am upset that I have to start from Zero. Thanks all again. God bless you all.

Hi OP,

I just wanted to chime in  to say that while I know it's frustrating, please don't think you're starting from zero because you aren't.  I'm an engineer and depending where my friends and I went to work, we were in the same boat as you, even if with bachelors degrees from ABET credited US universities.  For example, manufacturing, civil engineering, and theme park engineers all had to have passed the FE exam to even get their resumes looked at.  It just happens that your skills are in an area requiring that FE exam (the first step of EIT)

I think you need to complete an extra form since you did not go to a US ABET university and unfortunately the exam will only be offered on certain dates (I believe once in the autumn and once in the spring). The info for NY is here: http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/pels/  The exam is six hours but there are lots of study guides available so you can start prepping as soon as you'd like.

Only get a Masters if you WANT it- studying for the FE will be more cost efficient/quicker and should break down the barrier for you.

@SeabreezeUF  Thanks for guiding me and supporting me,  yes I will do preparation of FE Exam also agree with you FE Exam is cost effective and will help me in resume looked at by Companies.

This is a good plan.  As I said before there are options that are not a particular about licensing as an engineer.  Where you choose to live will definitely impact your opportunities.

When you look for places to study, you will find public community colleges and vocational-technical (Vo-Tech) schools the most cost effective and best choice.  Do NOT get sucked into the private-for-profit ones that promise help getting financial aid. These are generally far more expensive and of poorer quality than ones supported by taxes.  Most are county or regional so you may need to relocate.  They can also assist you in finding a part time job; if you are lucky, they may have opportunities in technical companies looking for potential full time employees.
