I believe once you have your NVC # you're able to check the status of your visa online somewhere, and you can still fill out forms and get things done with the number even if the embassy hasn't received it. Once the status of your case says it's arrived at the embassy then you'd be able to schedule the interview, medical, etc.

Thanks! We are actually worried that we would still need the physical mail somewhere along the way. Anyway I have another question, so if we call for the NVC number, is NVC still gonna send a mail containing the NVC number? And to whom are they going to send this, to the petitioner or beneficiary?

Actually timing for scheduling the interview, medical, etc. is different for each country. For @Emm2018 and I in the Philippines, we can schedule the interview, medical, etc after we have our NVC#.

Right, but the embassy will still need to have received the case from the NVC, having it be in 'ready' status before you have an interview, correct?

The medical is the only one I know of that is varying per country. Mine for example, you cannot schedule the medical until the embassy has received your P3.

Yes you are correct, it must be received at the embassy and in ready status before the interview. In the end all our loved ones will be part of the same family living in the USA.

Are you asking if you need the specific document from the NVC which contains your NVC#? I think most people never receive it, and typically do not wait for the document to get everything finished. I can't imagine the embassy would require it, as they would have everything the NVC has at that point.

It would most likely be listed in the packet 3 instructions if it is required.

The wait time is normally given in raw days meaning from NOA2 to NVC receipt is XX. It seems to be running about 16 days or little more. NVC is referred to the governing body that issues the case numbers. Read more here https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate/national-visa-center.html  Sub-forums can be found on the blue ribbon above, select the tab for "forums" and scroll 3/4 of the way down the page where you will find the links. For HK the link is here http://www.visajourney.com/forums/forum/94-china/  Keep in mind some country's sub-forum are very active and there are many that are not. But don't pass over the chance that someone will be there to help.

Spend some time at the HK US Embassy website and read up on what the requirements are and what is next. Here is the link: https://hk.usconsulate.gov/visas/immigrant-visas/fiancee/the-interview/

Lastly, many of our answers are predicated on the information you supply in your profile. When we look at the left column and can't determine your timeline or your Embassy it's hard for us to give you a factual answer.

If you look at the profile others here, they have a flag for their country, so it makes it easy for us to reply.

So, if you could help yourself out and complete your profile sure would help us out when we want to reply to your question.

Go to the top right of this page select your name (it's on the upper right hand corner)>my profile>[below your picture on the right column] edit my profile. Scroll to the bottom and fill in "Immigration Info". There now we can better serve you.

Thanks

This is really helpful and much appreciated! I will now try to figure out how to update my profile/timeline.

So I think I should definitely call NVC now as it’s about 20 days...so as I read some other replies, that means I can submit DS160 once I have my NVC case number? I thought I would have to do these only after I receive the package...but it seems that I can do a lot of things before receiving the mail once I obtain the NVC #...! Please correct me if I’m wrong, thank you so much!

Yes in deed you can submit the DS-160 now if you like and it's ok to start calling the NVC for your case number.

For the interview you will not need the NVC letter nor for any other steps. The NOA2 is critical because you will use it for the WAC# now when you go to submit the DS-160 and you will need it for the AOS once you arrive and marry in the US.

The approval in the form of an email will go to the petitioner. More information on the process for the Philippines is here. If you use it and complete everything you will have a smooth process for your interview and the approval.

Your partially correct but since each Embassy is different (as you are aware) your answer does not fit the narrative for the Embassy in the Philippines. The Philippines Embassy (USEM) is an easy Embassy to receive a visa from. Once they receive their case number from NVC then they can pay the interview fee, schedule the interview, go and complete their medical and CFO (this is a interview and presentation centered around IMBRA that all Filipinos are required to complete prior to immigration) and gather all the necessary documents. By the time they complete all the preamble stuff their file should be at the Embassy and marked ready. If not then they can reschedule their interview once the website shows "ready". No harm in canceling and reschedule but the limit is twice before a penalty is imposed.

Yeah, I wasn't being careful how I worded it. I know that most people can schedule their interview with the case number, just not attend unless it's in 'ready' status.  Why would you want to schedule it though, not knowing when the case will be ready? Isn't that a gamble?

Philippines requires the interview be schedule because the confirmation page is one of the documents needed for the Medical appointment. They can't start the medical exam without it.

For us, NVC did not send ANY snail mail TO ANYONE.

At the NVC stage I gave them my (Beneficiary) email address once they had my case. (DO THAT!).

NVC did not contact my USC petitioner. The last notice he received for anything was the NOA2 and that was in the mail.

I (Beneficiary) received an email from NVC once my case left for my embassy. Not sure of this email's importance yet (if any) as I had already called NVC for my case # so I could track my case on CEAC but I have printed a copy for the file just in case.

Moral of the story: it's "Beneficiary time" once the case gets to the NVC. Most, if not ALL, documents will be sent to the beneficiary whether by mail or email. As soon as NVC gets your case, GET YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS ON THAT FILE as, if you don't want to wait for snail mail, this is your best option. NVC won't have it or ask for it, YOU MUST OFFER IT!
