In the past couple of months, Mrs. T-B. & I have remodeled our own house and the rental house.

The local Sears Hardware (the closest such store to us) had closed down earlier.

Had they remained open, they'd have benefited from thousands of dollars in our appliance/materials purchases.

Instead, Home Despot got most of that business, and Lowe's got the rest.

Sidebar:  After Sears Hardware closed, the Double Dave's franchisee in the same shopping center found that he wasn't doing the business that he'd been doing before, and he closed his pizza parlor.

I remember when Montgomery Ward liquidated in 2001.

They closed all their stores simultaneously.

This was painful, but it was one death blow versus 1,000 little stabs to the heart.

Side note #1:  Wards has an online presence still:  www.wards.com

Side note #2:  During the MW store liquidations, I got myself a Citizen watch at half (or more) off.  The stretch-band fit perfectly.  I've worn that watch every day since, and (amidst routine battery-replacements) it has performed perfectly.

Oh man... so many happy memories of Wards! I remember Best, Woolworths, and Hechts. Went to Toys R' Us before closed up a while back, was very sad.

Woolworths

There was actually still a Woolworth in Matamoros, Mexico in the mid-2000s (meaning first decade thereof).  They had the candy counter and everything.  I saw it myself and was both amazed and thrilled.  When I went back in approx. 2009, the store was still there but was no longer identified as Woolworth.  I dimly remember searching and learning that the final bankruptcy or liquidation of the English remainder of the company had been completed about that time.

Aunt T-B., now no longer with us, was very well-read.  She got a quiet kick out of calling the store "Woolsworth," presumably as a takeoff on "Wordsworth."

And they've actually been closing high-volume stores, for unclear reason.

Their goal of going online-only is not feasible: people need to look, feel, inspect merchandise in person.

I am actually beginning to move away from online shopping.  I have not been a big prolific online shopper, but I have used Amazon on occasion, but recently their quality has declined, I have received broken merchandise, or seen prices higher than what I see in stores, etc., so I tend to think twice before opening Amazon.

Yes.

Kmart Corporation (simply known as Kmart and stylized as kmart) is an American big box department store chain headquartered in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, United States. The company was incorporated in 1916 as S. S. Kresge Corporation and renamed to Kmart Corporation in 1977.[
