Next-closest is 8 hours away.

I’m surprised they have ANY stores still open.  End of an era, for sure.

And they've actually been closing high-volume stores, for unclear reason.

Their goal of going online-only is not feasible: people need to look, feel, inspect merchandise in person.

I see they are now selling Craftsman tools in our local Lowes.  The only thing I would miss when Sears/Kmart goes away.

Kmarts biggest issue was supply chain. Always out of stock. If you have ever been in a Walmart/Sams DC it is an amazing operation

If you think Sam’s is good, you should check out Costco.  Those folks just might put Sam’s out of business. Double the sales $$ using only 10% more floor space.

There is a Kmart close to me that is in a small town and I never see many people in there but they aren't closing for some reason.

Kmart was awesome back in the day... and then Walmart about killed it as they do just about anything. Our small town Kmart closed early this year. You could usually find decent clothing and furnishings for reasonable prices. But my biggest issue with it is that it was run down inside, the employees always looked dead tired or annoyed, and there was no real modernization to the store. No self check-outs or updated stuff ever. Sears shut years ago. The next place I'm concerned about is Penny's... my god that place is terrible these days. Nothing wrong with the clothing, but it's a dirty place, and looks like a tornado mowed through the store. Most clothing is just heaped in piles or on the floor.

You can kiss pennys goodbye . Last time I went in the one here we could not get any help, when we asked we got attitude. It closed shortly after.

Generally the same experience we had last week too. Only one dressing room (four stalls) to be found and a line of ladies waiting out the doorway and snaking through the store, my husband asks lady if there is another room available. She ignores him. He stands unphased until she rolls her eyes and says ''what?!" He asks again, and all she could offer was to glare and shake her head no. I was so mad I put everything back on the rack and left the store.

dont know if you have Belks . They are pretty good.

Not around these parts don't think. Most stores won't come to this town because of the reputation.

This is what mystifies me -- the small-town KMarts seem to be remaining open, whereas the metro-area KMarts have been the ones to be closed.

I remember when Montgomery Ward liquidated in 2001.

They closed all their stores simultaneously.

This was painful, but it was one death blow versus 1,000 little stabs to the heart.

 

Side note #1:  Wards has an online presence still:  www.wards.com

 

Side note #2:  During the MW store liquidations, I got myself a Citizen watch at half (or more) off.  The stretch-band fit perfectly.  I've worn that watch every day since, and (amidst routine battery-replacements) it has performed perfectly.
