So stupid question, I get it’s best to do this right away as Im in the K1 process now, so my fiancé will have her current name issued on her social security card not her new last name once we marry after the fact?

You get the first card in her maiden name, then go back to the office after you get marriage certificate to change it to her married name is the best way to go about it from what others have posted. I'm waiting on my K1 also. I didn't know the I-94 was available that soon after entry. Heard it took a day or 2 at least, I'll be printing it before I leave the airport and stop at the closest Social Security office to LAX.

Here on a K1? Need married and a Certificate in hand within a few hours? I'm here to help. Come to Vegas and I'll marry you Vegas style!!   Visa Journey members are always FREE for my services. I know the costs involved in this whole game of immigration, and if I can save you some money I will!

the reason to do it right away is to already have the card issued and later you can change it as many times as you wish if re-marry or whatever...not that i am wishing you that. Once you have the SS#, you have it for life and don't get in all this trouble of waiting for EAD to get it and changing to married and all the expiring i-94 issues and more difficulties

you are absolutely correct. I-94 is available immediately after entry into the USA and not 14 days or whatever non-sence people still think. Social security should be the 1st thing you apply for

Yes, do it right away. Changing her name is 100% optional BTW, as is changing your name to hers or both of you changing your names to something new. It's not required and it doesn't matter

Hi:

Just as a reminder.  Do not do the same mistake that others have done. The moment you enter the US, go online and get you I-94 and print it out. If possible go before you get married and apply for your Social Security number. As all of us that live currently in the US know very well that basically nothing can be done w/o a social security number.  I dragged my wife outta bed the next morning with printed I-94 and necessary paperwork to file for social security and later that same day we got our marriage license, officiant to sign our license and marriage certificate, all in less than 10 hours. Currently times for AOS are extremely long. Do yourself a favor and file as soon as you can. Wedding ceremonies and else can be done later.

Thanks and good luck to ya'll

So you went to an SSA office first, then to a city hall, right?

The SSA doesn’t always accept the marriage certificate to change the name.  In our case we had to wait for the either the EAD or GC to change the name.  We decided to wait for the GC as at that time the AOS was not taking so long and we were also able to get the DHS Authorization note removed as well.

Yes to the SSA office first, then the courthouse here. No City hall in this place. More like a Small building with different county and city offices all in one building. No budget for anything like a city hall.

This is a really stupid question but can someone inform me on what this is? I went to a website and it directed me here https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home

My fiance will be entering the U.S hopefully within a month. What will be the next steps after getting married?

This is the website to retrieve his customs declarations when he lands in the USA.  It's called the I-94. You give in the information and retrieve the info and print it.

You use the I-94 to go to any SSA office and apply for a SS#.

After you have done the step above...you can go and get your marriage license and get married and get certificate.

After the marriage you can file for AOS

I'm a bit confused as the following website show that you don't need to fill out a paper I-94 form as it all done electronically when you arrive with the CBP and that they can also issue a paper I-94 upon entry.

How are you supposed to fill out all that information when you arrive if you don't have access to a computer much less a printer? Or do you mean get it done as soon as you get home?

I guess I'm interpreting your original statement at the start of the thread such that you have to do all this as soon as you land prior to getting past immigration.

Thank you @Dee elle for the explanation. I-94 is electronically done by CBP, but you need the physical paper to show it at SSA office. It will be filled out. When your fiance gets here and you are ready to print it..you can go to the website and you will be able to retrieve the info on and understand what we mean.
